Busy week for Waterdown karter
Tyler Brown fifth at Karting Nationals,
then tests stock car

Tyler Brown, a 12-year-old karter from Waterdown, Ontario took part in the
Sunoco presents the GM Racing ASN Canada FIA National Karting Championships
last weekend at Mosport International Raceway, and then spent Tuesday Aug
19 behind the wheel of a 140hp stock car at Flamboro Speedway.

"It has been a hectic few days for sure," the young driver said. "But the
main thing is to focus on what you are doing at the time, and things will
normally work out."

The week began at Mosport International Raceway with two days of open
testing and Brown was happy with his 4B Racing /Assante MBA kart. "It went
well, but I knew the best in the country would be here, so we had to be
better than good to stand a shot at winning."

Brown qualified sixth for the prefinal, but he rocketed into the lead by
the end of lap 1. By the end of the prefinal he had been demoted to second
but he had a plan. "In this kind of racing the draft is critical, so I
actually wanted to be second so I could draft by for the win on the
straight." Brown's drafting move was thwarted and he made a last ditch
effort to steal the win coming to the final turn. "I was too low and got on
the dirty part of the track and nearly spun," Brown said. Brown wound up sixth.

In the final, Tyler immediately moved back up to fourth, and tried to take
third but was forced onto the grass. That made him lose the lead draft of
the top two karts, but his main problem were the two karts behind him. They
were working together and eventually caught and passed him, demoting him to
fifth in the final tally. "I'm happy with fifth," Brown said. "You need
some friends to work with in the draft or else you have big problems. I was
on my own, but still came home fifth, which I and my 4B team are
really happy with."

After a hectic weekend of karting, Brown tested an Ontario Pro Challenge
racer at Flamboro in a supervised test session. He is the youngest driver
ever to drive one of the potent three quarter scale stock cars. "It was
really fun. The cars are great, lots of power and drive really well. I
could get into racing one of those."
Brown did a session with an instructor sitting beside him in the two seat
stock car, and then did a 10-lap session on his own. He was restricted to
only using full throttle for half the straightaway, but he still managed a
very respectable 19.60 second lap on his tenth and final lap.
