Carlson Comes Back For
Hales Corners UMP LM Win
By John Shea
Franklin, Wis., Aug. 23--There have been a lot of great finishes in the
55-year history of the Hales Corners Speedway, and the conclusion to the UMP
late model feature on Saturday night provided another one. The "South Milwaukee
Rocket" Chris Carlson hounded defending track champion Bret Sievert for the
final 13 laps of the main event and took a popular win with a last lap, last
turn pass which left him a half car length clear at the checkered flag.
Don Scheffler won the night's sportsmen feature, with Jim Zdroik topping
the modified main, Ken Fleury Jr. taking the win in the Hales Whales headliner
and Tony Prietzel topping the 4-cylinder Mud Puppies nightcapper.
At the start of the 30-lap UMP late model feature Sievert was able to get
the jump on polesitter Dan Sorce and take the lead at the conclusion of lap
one as Rick Scheffler, Ron Stroika and Scott Specht followed. Specht moved up
to fourth by lap five but suffered mechanical problems a short time later.
The event's first caution flag appeared on lap eight when Turk Letizia
did his tornado impression and spun in turn four. Carlson was up sixth at this
point and was running fourth behind Sievert, Sorce and Scheffler when the
event's second yellow came out on lap 10 when George Scheffler lost a wheel on the
backstretch, prompting a red flag.
When the race resumed Rick Scheffler got around Sorce for second, with
Carlson demoting him a further spot to fourth. Then the battle for second was
on between Scheffler and Carlson, with Carlson taking the spot on lap 16.
Carlson, who struggled mightily in the night's preliminary events, had his car
working perfectly for the main event and quickly closed the gap to Sievert as
Rick Scheffler was suddenly joined in a fight for third place by his brother
Russ, who had steadily moved his way up from the 12th starting position and gotten
around Sorce for fourth place.
Carlson drew even with Sievert along the low side of the track but the
duo ran up on a pack of slower cars, allowing Sievert some breathing room. At
that point Sievert switched from the top of the track to the bottom, taking
Carlson's line away and forcing him to run the high side. Carlson made it work,
however, and kept the heat on Sievert in the closing laps. Heading into turn
three on the final lap, Carlson got a good run at Sievert and used his
momentum to shoot past exiting turn four, bringing the crowd to its feet with a photo
finish. Russ Scheffler slipped past his brother Rick in the final laps to
place third, with Sorce a solid fifth.
The sportsmen main event started with a bang as Steve Printz collided
with former track champ Dave Gorny heading into turn one on the opening laps,
sending Gorny hard into the turn one wall. Gorny left the track with the
assistance of two tow trucks, while Printz continued on with a damaged car.
John Sidesky led the first three laps of the 20-lap contest before Jeff
Tondryk took the lead along the inside of turns three and four. John Schultz
III went three-wide a lap later to go past Tondryk and take the lead heading
onto the frontstretch.
Don Scheffler was running fourth behind Schultz III, Tondryk and Sidesky
but quickly picked his way through the pack and ran the cushion in turns three
and four to take command at lap eight.
With no caution flags to slow his pace, Scheffler quickly opened up a
healthy advantage as Roger Lee worked his way up from seventh at the start to run
second with fine laps remaining. Lee gave chase all the way to the checkered
flag but could not find a way to deny Scheffler, who picked up the victory.
Tondryk placed third at the finish, with defending sportsmen track champ Don
Sorce Jr. fourth and Schultz III fading to fifth.
Zdroik topped the modified main event as nephew Jason Zdroik failed to
win a sixth consecutive feature. Mike Bodendorfer was second at the finish,
with Jimmy Muth Jr. third, Stewart Frost fourth and Brian Crapser fifth.
Fleury held off Chris Hoedel to pick up the win in the Hales Whales
feature. Keith Faber was third at the finish, with Lon Meagher and Al Tietyen
rounding out the top five.
Prietzel held off Chris Blake for the victory in the 4-cylinder Mud
Puppies show-closer. Kevin Kuhnke, Johnny Knoxville and Pat Krimmer placed third
through fifth, respectively.
The final scheduled night of stock car racing ever at the historic
third-mile Hales Corners Speedway oval is set for Saturday night, Aug. 30. with a
full program of UMP late model, sportsmen, modified and Hales Whales racing,
plus the 4-cylinder Mud Puppies. All of the divisions are scheduled for extended
