GMC Announces 2004 Canyon Pricing

BURLINGTON, Vt.- General Motors' Pontiac-GMC division today announced introductory pricing for the 2004 GMC Canyon. The all-new midsize pickup goes on sale this fall.

Canyon's Manufacturer Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) begins at $16,530 for the SL two-wheel-drive Regular Cab, or $18,875 for the SL two-wheel-drive Extended Cab. The SLE two-wheel-drive Crew Cab has a $21,115 MSRP and the SLE four-wheel-drive Crew Cab has an MSRP of $23,725. All prices include a $635 destination charge.

Popular options, such as power locks, power windows, electronically controlled outside mirrors and remote keyless entry, are available in the Power Convenience Group for $500. The available Comfort Convenience Group offers a tilt steering wheel and cruise control for $395. Additional options include side-curtain air bags (starting at $195), XM Satellite Radio ($325), OnStar ($695), trailer hitch and wiring ($255) and traction control for two-wheel-drive models with the G80 locking differential ($295).

"Canyon's comprehensive list of standard and available features complements its versatility," said Lynn Myers, Pontiac-GMC general manager. "Whether it's used for work or recreation, there's an assuring feeling that Canyon delivers more than expected for the task."

All Canyon non-fleet models include air conditioning; a locking, dual-position tailgate; four-wheel anti-lock brakes (ABS); and driver and front passenger frontal air bags with dual-stage inflators.

The standard engine in all models is the Vortec 2800 inline four-cylinder, which produces 175 horsepower and 185 lb.-ft. of torque - more power and torque than any other four-cylinder in its class. The 220-horsepower Vortec 3500 inline five-cylinder is available for all models and delivers power and torque comparable to many competitors' standard six-cylinder engines. Canyon's standard transmission is a five-speed manual. An electronically controlled four-speed automatic is optional.

Built on GM's all-new midsize truck architecture, Canyon's foundation is a robust ladder frame that has a 267-percent improved torsional rigidity compared to GMC's current compact pickup. Leveraging the strengths built into GMC's popular Envoy and Sierra, the Canyon delivers class-leading refinement with features including:

  • Hydraulically assisted rack-and-pinion steering
  • Large front disc brakes with twin-piston calipers
  • Coil-over front suspension on two-wheel-drive models
  • Torsion bar front suspension on four-wheel-drive models
  • Tuned body mounts that reduce interior noise and vibration
  • GMC Canyon models are built at GM's assembly plant in Shreveport, La.
