Lord Corporation Engineering Fellow Leads Webcast Technology Review Of 'Smart Materials' in Cars, Trucks, Aircraft

Dr. J. David Carlson Recognized as World Authority on Rheonetic(TM) MR Fluids

CARY, N.C., Aug. 20 -- The Society of Automotive Engineers International has asked a scientist with Lord Corporation to lead an important 120-minute broadcast Sept. 25 on the state of "smart materials" technology, with a particular emphasis on today's real world, commercial applications in vehicles.

A physicist and prolific inventor who has spent nearly two decades exploring and developing the commercial potential for Rheonetic(TM) magnetorheological (MR) fluids and devices, Dr. J. David Carlson is recognized as an international authority on this extraordinary technology.

Dr. Carlson, an engineering fellow with Lord Corporation, has been awarded 50 U.S. patents relating to controllable materials and devices and is the author of more than 100 technical papers. He is one of the founders of the International ER and MR Fluid Conference Series that has been held every two years since 1987.

Lord Corporation is the only commercial supplier of MR fluids and devices. Lord has developed MR applications for automobiles, trucks, construction and agriculture equipment, bridges, buildings, prosthetic knees, washing machines, and in space.

Rheonetic MR technology is based on proprietary and patented formulations, damper, mount, brake and clutch designs and sophisticated computer control algorithms. When exposed to a magnetic field, MR materials change consistency from a fluid state to a near-solid state. The MR fluids respond to a magnetic field within milliseconds.

Participants joining the webcast discussion, titled Vehicular Applications of Smart Materials: Beyond the Hype and Out the Laboratory, will have a chance to explore not only current commercial applications but also those most likely to move into commercial development in the near future.

Other panelists will discuss developments in other types of smart materials. Dr. Eric H. Anderson, vice president, principal engineer with Active Systems, CSA Engineering Inc., will lead discussion on piezoelectrics; Dr. Darel E. Hodgson, president of Nitinol Technologies Inc., is an expert in shape memory alloys; and Dr. Donald J. Leo, associate professor, Mechanical Engineering Department of Virginia Tech., will talk about electroactive polymers. The applications discussed during the conference will relate to any ground or aerospace vehicle.

The webcast gets under way at 11:30 a.m. EDT. Registration will be accepted until 8 p.m. E.T. Sept. 24, 2003. Contact SAE at 1-877-606-7323 (724/776-4970 outside the U.S. or Canada) or at CustomerService@sae.org.
