Shane Lewis To Race For ARC In Speed World Challenge
Shane Lewis Signed to Race for ARC in SPEED World Challenge
JUPITER, Fla., August 19, 2003 – Shane Lewis has been signed to drive
for ARC Racing at two upcoming races in the SCCA Pro Racing Speed World
Challenge Championships. The Jupiter, Florida-resident was asked to
drive ARC Racing’s Mazda Protégé ES 2.0L I4 in the SCCA Speed Touring
Car (ST) class of the popular SCCA Pro Racing series at Road America
(August 8-10) and Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca (September 5-7). Lewis will
be doing double-duty driving at both events as each coincides with
American Le Mans Series (ALMS) races at the same track. Lewis races the
No. 63 ACEMCO Automotive/ Yokohama Ferrari 360 GT Modena in the ALMS.
This marks Lewis’ first time back in a SCCA Speed World Challenge car
since leaving the series after one season in 1996. While competing in
the World Challenge, Lewis earned three Sports 2 (S2) class victories in
the series, then known as the SCCA Pro Racing World Challenge. That
class and that season are widely considered the fastest World Challenge
entries to ever race. The ride in the ARC/ TBPG/ Red Line Mazdaspeed
Protégé is not Lewis’ first in a Mazda race car either. The three-time
24 Hours of Le Mans starter drove a Mazda MX-6 to victory in the
inaugural IMSA Endurance Championship event at Daytona International
Speedway.
“I’m real eager to get into the ARC Racing Mazda Protégé and to be back
racing in the Speed World Challenge,” enthused Lewis. “Things were a lot
different in the series back in ’96. We didn’t do standing starts. I’m
really jazzed about that. It should be a blast. ARC puts together a
great car and the Mazda is as good as they come. I’m going to have a bit
of a learning curve to figure out the Toyo Tires because I haven’t raced
on them before but I’m not too worried about that. I’ve tried to watch
every World Challenge race this year from pit lane or on SPEED Channel
and the competition in Touring class is incredible.”
Shane Lewis is the 1998 Professional Sports Car Racing Rising Star award
winner and is a multiple race winner in IMSA, SCCA Pro and Grand-Am
sanctioned events. He has raced in three 24 Hours of Le Mans, six 24
Hours of Daytona, seven 12 Hours of Sebring and four Petit Le Mans. He
drives the ACEMCO Motorsports Ferrari 360 GT Modena in the ALMS and the
Nuzzo Motorsports Mini Cooper S in Grand-Am Cup.
