CANNON TAKES NO. 8 FRIDAY NIGHT IN BRAINERD
BRAINERD, Minn. (Aug. 15, 2003) - Scotty Cannon placed his Oakley Funny Car
in the No. 8 position tonight with a 5.118-second elapsed time at 290.63
mph. For Cannon's Oakley team, this event is a continuation of the test
session at Route 66 Raceway in Joliet, Ill., that was held earlier this
week.
"We were testing in Chicago and the track was real good," he said. "We were
actually testing for a slick track. Some of the stuff that we learned on the
back half of the clutch we actually used here and we went to extremes that
time (in the second qualifying session). The car went quicker to 330 feet
than it did in Chicago. It run real good early, but we had the clutch slowed
down so much it was just real slow off the back. The bottom line is now that
we've changed so much stuff on the car if I don't get some sort of runs to
look at then I'm just out there swinging in the air.
"We changed everything from the fuel system to the clutch and the type of
clutch we were running. If we go four or five races and we haven't made any
improvement I won't be too happy. My goal now for the next two runs is to
run as good as anybody else runs in the heat, because that's when we're
going to run on Sunday."
