Scheffler Dominates Hales'
UMP Late Model Feature
By John Shea
Franklin, Wis., Aug. 16--Russ Scheffler started from the pole and
completely dominated his foes en route to victory in the UMP late model feature
Saturday on Tom Klippel Memorial Night at the Hales Corners Speedway.
Don Sorce Jr. kept Roger Lee from his second consecutive sweep in the
sportsmen division, while Jason Zdroik enjoyed his fifth consecutive modified
feature win in the Da Boyz Pro Graphix Modified Triple Crown finale. Jim
Reinhardt and Cory Carlson rounded out the night with victories in the Hales Whales
and 4-cylinder Mud Puppies nightcappers, respectively.
Scheffler got the jump on Dan Sorce at the start of the 30-lap UMP late
model feature and rocketed out to a healthy lead in the opening laps as Sorce
and Scott Specht disputed second place ahead of Ron Stroika and Bill Rezutek.
Scheffler just caught the tailenders when his brother Rick Scheffler spun on
the backstretch to produce the event's only caution flag on lap nine.
When the race resumed Russ continued to have a firm grip on the lead as
Specht got past Sorce for second place. Sorce began to drift back through the
field slightly while Bret Sievert and George Scheffler worked their way into
the top five as the event approached a finish.
When the checkered flag dropped, Scheffler scored his fifth feature win
of the season in the Suburban Drywall / Spancrete / Behling Racing Equipment /
Wild Inc. Pro Power Grand Prix. Specht placed second, with Sievert third,
George Scheffler fourth and Sorce fifth.
In the 20-lap sportsmen feature John Schultz III and Bob Brent spent the
first nine laps racing side by side at the front of the field with a pack of
cars hot on their heels. A half lap later Sorce Jr. had enough and dipped low
to go three wide up the backstretch and take the lead heading into turn three,
muscling Schultz and Brent aside.
Schultz pitted with a flat left front tire four laps later as Brent
yielded the second spot to Lee, who challenged leader Sorce Jr. at every turn. Pat
Heaney got around Brent for third at lap 15 with Lee drawing even with Sorce
Jr. two laps later.
The two leaders raced door to door for the next two and half laps before
they encountered slower traffic heading into turn three on the final lap. The
clogged track ahead of them was all Sorce Jr. needed to keep Lee at bay for
the final two turns and pick up the win in his Sorce Services / 2 Brothers /
Lucky Bob's Taurus. Heaney finished third, with Brent fourth and Jeff Tondryk
fifth.
The 35-lap Da Boyz Pro Graphix Modified Triple Crown proved to be a
caution-riddled affair as a total of five yellow flags slowed the 35-lap chase.
Mike Bodendorfer led the opening five circuits through one yellow before Jimmy
Muth Jr. took command along the inside in turns one and two.
Muth stayed up front until lap nine when he hit the backstretch wall,
handing the lead to Bret Sievert. Muth stopped on the backstretch with steering
problems to produce the event's second caution on lap 11.
Jim Zdroik used the outside line in turns one and two to take the lead
from Sievert on lap 14, but Sievert battled back to retake command on lap 20.
The third caution occurred on lap 23 when Russ Scheffler spun in turn four.
After two more laps of racing, Ed Lemay Jr. oiled the track on lap 25 to produce
the event's fourth slow down, during which time Sievert's car quit running
and he was pushed back to the pits, giving the lead back to Zdroik.
Jason Zdroik joined his uncle Jim at the front for the restart and the
two battled until the final caution on lap 28 when Sievert roared back onto the
track after repairs and promptly spun out in turn one. Over the final seven
circuits Jason worked Jim over until he was finally able to slip ahead and pick
up his fifth consecutive modified victory in his Hurricane Racing / Muskego
Tire entry. Mike Bodendorfer finished third, one spot ahead of his brother
Jeff Bodendorfer Jr., with Scott Barnharst rounding out the top five.
Reinhardt held off J.J. Weickowski to win the 20-lap Hales Whales
feature, with Barry Cates, Chris Hoedel and Jim Shambeau following in the third
through fifth positions, respectively.
Carlson was able to win the 4-cylinder Mud Puppies nightcapper by holding
off Kevin Kuhnke and Chris Baur in a spirited event. Dusty Jackson and Pat
Krimmer rounded out the top five.
Racing continues at the historic third-mile oval on Saturday night,
August 23 with a full program of UMP late model, sportsmen, modified and Hales
Whales racing, plus the 4-cylinder Mud Puppies. Also, a 250,000 penny pick-up for
children is planned for intermission. Time trials are at 6:15 p.m., with
racing immediately following qualifying. Hales Corners Speedway is located on
