Floridians Finish 1,2,3 in Panoz GT Pro Auto Race at Mosport Raceway
Today's Win Puts Eddie Mady In Narrow - and Unofficial - Series Lead
BOWMANVILLE, Ontario, Aug. 17 -- MOSPORT INTERNATIONAL RACEWAY -- Eddie Mady of Boca Raton, FL, overtook pole leader and fellow Floridian Gavin Riches of Ft Myers in the third lap of today's Panoz GT Pro Series and held on to take a four-second win just prior to the start of the American Le Mans Series here today.
The 5.2 second win puts him in the unofficial series lead by only a handful of points with only one race to go at the Petit Le Mans weekend in October at Road Atlanta.
Third place went to Fort Lauderdale native Barry Ellis.
In the GTS class of privately owned Panoz racers, sole entrant, Wes Ramsdale, of Long Grove, IL was declared winner.
Going into the final laps in yesterday's second qualification round, Mady was favored to take the pole, but a last minute hot lap by Riches meant Mady would again not record a pole start -- despite numerous podium finishes and last year's championship in the GTS class.
Mady said before the race that he would not be complacent. In lap three, he overtook Riches and kept a 3-5 second interval throughout the remainder of the 27-lap, 45-minute, 31-second timed race.
As an indication of how closely both drivers and cars are in terms of capabilities, at lap 17 with 15 minutes to go, the first four cars were separated by just 17.5 seconds.
