PPG Replacing Lids On 25- and 50-Pound Pails of Granular Calcium Hypochlorite Swimming Pool and Spa Products
PITTSBURGH--Aug. 1, 20034, 2003--PPG Industries today announced that on some of its new 25- and 50-pound pails of granular calcium hypochlorite pool and spa chemicals sold in the United States, the child-resistant latch might not fully engage, allowing containers to be opened by simply unscrewing the lid.As labels on the containers indicate, calcium hypochlorite is a corrosive chemical, which can damage eyes, burn skin and be fatal if swallowed. The labels also indicate that containers of the product should be kept away from children.
PPG, which has received no complaints or reports of injuries in connection with the lids, is asking consumers to contact their retailer or PPG to obtain a replacement lid free of charge.
Containers subject to this notice were distributed by PPG beginning March 1, 2003. Although PPG has ceased distribution of these containers and requested distributors and retailers to impound these containers, it is possible consumers could have recently purchased product in these containers from pool supply companies and other retail establishments.
PPG is asking consumers to immediately check their 25- and 50-pound pails of PPG pool and spa chemicals to determine if the lids contain the name M&M Industries, which manufactured the lids for PPG, and look like those pictured on the Web site referred to below. Containers not affected by the replacement program are also pictured on PPG's Web site. Both sets of pictures can be accessed via PPG's calcium hypochlorite Web site: http://corporate.ppg.com/ppg/sbu/calhypo/paillids.htm
