NOTES OF INTEREST: This year's race will be the 53rd ARCA RE/MAX race held on a clay oval since 1974 and the 21st ARCA race on the Springfield mile since 1983. The onslaught of Illinois drivers at Springfield is always stout with 16-time ARCA RE/MAX Series winner and veteran Bob Strait of Mokena entered in the Hendren Motorsports #66 Pontiac, 17-year-old local Springfield sensation Justin Allgaier, two-time series winner Eric Smith of Bloomington, E. Peoria powerhouse Todd Coon, Centralia's Joe Cooksey, series regular (6th in points) Brent Sherman of N. Barrington and newcomer Ryan Unzinger from El Paso. As has become an annual tradition, the Old Milwaukee Pole Award at Springfield will be named/presented in honor of the memory of Dean Roper. Roper was the winningest ARCA driver on dirt since 1974 with 9 wins at Springfield, DuQuoin and Terre Haute. Benton KY late model stand-out Terry English is expected to make his career-first RE/MAX Series attempt at Springfield in Keith Murt's Murtco Chevrolet. In addition, leading ARCA Rookie of the Year candidate Christi Passmore, a former sprint car driver from Pryor OK, will be making her first RE/MAX Series attempt at Springfield. Christi's uncle Jamie Passmore is also entered for his first attempt in the world's most diverse stock car tour. Additional entrants include third-generation racer Jason Jarrett, 4-time series winner Mark Gibson, sons of former ARCA champions Billy Venturini and Todd Bowsher, Soddy Daisy TN titan Ron Cox, Penndel PA veteran Andy Belmont and St. Joseph MO driver Doug Keller. After 20 RE/MAX Series events at Springfield, 6 have been won from the pole - Bob Keselowski in 1987, Bob Brevak in 1990, Bob Hill in 1994, Ken Schrader in 1998 and defending race winner Frank Kimmel in 2001 & 2002. Kimmel, the current point leader, has won 5 of the last 6 ARCA races on dirt (Springfield three times and DuQuoin twice). In addition, the 4-time series champ won on the West VA Motor Speedway clay oval in 1997. Kimmel is currently tied for second with Bob Keselowski on the all-time dirt win list (6 wins) in the modern era (1974-2002). Past ARCA RE/MAX Series winners at Springfield include Bob Keselowski 4, Frank Kimmel and Dean Roper 3, Bobby Bowsher and Tim Steele 2, and Bill Baird, Bob Brevak, Bob Hill, Bobby Jacks, Ken Schrader and Billy Thomas all with 1.
