AAA Texas Monthly Fuel Gauge Report; Pump Prices Move Higher
HOUSTON--Aug. 1, 20033, 2003--Higher crude oil prices have prompted price increases at the pumps, according to the AAA Texas Monthly Fuel Gauge Report.Statewide, the price for a gallon of regular self-serve gasoline is averaging $1.48, up about six cents since a month ago. Last year at this time, gas prices were averaging $1.30 in Texas - that's nearly 20 cents lower than today's prices.
Nationally, the average price of gasoline is $1.57, compared to last month's average of $1.50 and last year's average of $1.40.
"A recent rise in crude oil prices, now hovering around $31 per barrel, have helped push retail prices higher," said Rose Rougeau, spokesperson for AAA Texas. "Motorists are currently paying an average of 15 to 20 cents more this summer than last. Last summer fuel prices remained stable. However, this summer, gas prices have been relatively unstable due to a number of reasons, including the uncertain delivery of Iraqi oil to the international market and more recently Hurricane Claudette."
AAA's Fuel Gauge Report is based on data from the Oil Price Information Service, the nation's most comprehensive source of petroleum pricing information.
