American Axle & Manufacturing Launches Production for the Chevrolet SSR
DETROIT, Aug. 12, 2003 -- American Axle & Manufacturing Holdings, Inc. (AAM), which is traded as AXL on the NYSE, today announced that it recently launched production of the driveline system for Chevrolet's all- new SSR (Super Sport Roadster).
The Chevy SSR, the world's first retractable-roof sport truck, features AAM's rear axle, drive shaft, stabilizer system and rear stabilizer bar links.
The rear axle system features AAM's PowerLite(TM) aluminum carrier and PowerDense(TM) hypoid and net shaped differential gears, as well as disc brakes, multi-link rear suspension design and a helical gear limited slip differential.
The driveshaft system features AAM's PowerLite(TM) aluminum design and industry leading universal joint durability. For the SSR, AAM engineers utilized race proven technology from the Performance Products(TM) driveshafts it supplies to top tier NASCAR Winston Cup and Busch Series teams.
The front stabilizer system features a lightweight, durable link design that offers weight savings and greater durability than conventional steel link designs.
"With the SSR, Chevrolet has carved a unique niche in the automotive marketplace," says AAM President & COO Joel D. Robinson. "In addition to developing the unique driveline system for the production SSR, AAM engineers worked with General Motors on design enhancements and validation, as well as durability testing, analysis and verification. The design of the vehicle, part roadster, part pickup truck, is unlike anything on the road today, and we are delighted to be a part of this groundbreaking vehicle."
AAM is a world leader in the manufacture, design, engineering, and validation of driveline systems and related components and modules, chassis systems and forged products for trucks, sport utility vehicles and passenger cars.
