GM Racing and Sunoco to Sponsor Canadian National Karting Championships
Mosport hosts 'double' weekend of action
TORONTO, ONTARIO - (August 10, 2003) GM Racing, worldwide racing arm of
General Motors, and Sunoco Ultra 94, the performance brand of Suncor Energy
Products, have signed as sponsors of the 2003 Canadian National Karting
Championships taking place at Mosport's Driver Development Track on the
August 15-17. The event will be called Sunoco Presents the GM Racing 2003
ASN Canada FIA National Karting Championships.
"I am delighted that these two performance-focused companies have decided
to get involved in our National Championships," said Paul Cooke, Vice
President of Competition, ASN Canada FIA, and National Director of
KartSport. "Sunoco and Ron Fellows took the plunge last year when we formed
the Sunoco Ron Fellows Karting Championship," Cooke continued, "and this
series has changed the face of kart racing competitions in Ontario forever.
This year GM Racing, as well as Pratt & Miller, the constructor of Ron's
race cars, got involved as well and the series did not simply grow - it
tripled!"
Fellows will be a busy man this weekend as Mosport is also playing host to
the ALMS series this weekend on the 'big track', where Fellows will be
behind the wheel of his Corvette C5R. "This is my most important race of
the year," Fellows said. "After all, you want to do well when you are the
local guy and everyone is rooting for you. The addition of the National
Karting races at this event means that I get to be a racer, a series
principal and spectator all on one weekend. This should be one great event."
"Ron is a great partner in our Ultra 94 brand's performance positioning",
said Patricia Anderson, Sunoco's Director of Marketing, " so it makes sense
for us to be involved in his ALMS race on our home turf. "We are so proud
of everything that has been achieved in the Sunoco Ron Fellows Karting
Championship in such a short time that we want to grow awareness of the
excitement that exists at these Karting races. We want to ensure the
continued growth of extraordinarily capable racers coming from Canada.
Naturally I hope that lots of race fans will come to cheer Ron on," she
continued, "but I hope they take the opportunity while they are at Mosport
to take in some of the karting action as well; they certainly won't be
disappointed".
Karting action gets underway with nine National Championships on the line.
Teams will come from across Canada - and the USA - to contest one of the
most sought after titles in North American karting - Canadian National
Champion.
The action gets underway for both the cars and karts on Friday, August 15.
Heats and pre-finals for the karts will go on Saturday, with both the ALMS
race and finals for the National Karting championships happening on Sunday.
