Terry Borcheller - Watkins Glen race
four!
Terry Borcheller notched his fourth Rolex Sports Car Series win on Friday
evening and moved to third in the Daytona Prototype driver championship, just one
point off the lead. Borcheller, of Phoenix, and Forest Barber of Fort Worth,
Tex., teamed for the win at Watkins Glen International in Watkins Glen, N.Y.
Barber qualified the No. 54 Bell Motorsports Doran JE4 third in the Daytona
Prototype class, fourth overall. Despite earlier rain and a wet track, he
started the race on dry race tires, rather than the rain tires his competitors
chose. His gamble paid off as the track dried, giving him more mechanical grip
on the 2.45-mile road course.
Borcheller drove the second stint, taking the race lead after 38 minutes of
the two-hour race. He set the fastest race lap (1:10.699) en route to a
7.368-second margin of victory.
"The preparation the team did over the last month really paid big dividends
in the evolution of the car over the weekend," Borcheller said. "We were ready
for every session; every time we went out the car got better and went faster.
By race time we had a perfect car. The Goodyear tires were really good for
the inclement conditions. The track was really 'green' and wet in a lot of
spots, but the tires did a great job."

Borcheller's win gave him 283 points in the 2003 Rolex Series Daytona
Prototype driver championship after nine of 12 races. He trails Brumos Racing
drivers David Donohue of Malvrin, Pa., and Mike Borkowski of Scottsdale, Ariz., who
lead with 284. Bell Motorsports is now second in team points behind Brumos
Racing, 283 to 284. [points unofficial, pending confirmation by Rolex Series]
