Racing at Raceway Park Postponed
ENGLISHTOWN, N.J. -The third day of racing at the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event being held at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park, has been postponed. Racing will resume Friday, August 22, at the final NHRA Northeast Division Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event scheduled for August 22-24, at Cecil County Dragway in Rising Sun, Md.
Prior to the day's action being postponed, several rounds of racing in all classes were completed, including two rounds of eliminations in Top Alcohol Dragster and Funny Car.
In Top Alcohol Dragster, David De Angelis of Middlesex, N.J., and Fran Monaghan Jr., of Meadowbrook, Pa., will face off in the class final. On his road to the final, Monaghan, who already has appeared in two finals this year, defeated defending National Champion Arthur Gallant in Round 1 and Atco Raceway winner Mike Kosky in the semifinals. In his first round bout, De Angelis eliminated No. 1 qualifier Rich McPhillips before then receiving a bye in the semifinals after current Northeast Division points leader Doug Foley, broke. The match-up with Monaghan in two weeks will be De Angelis' first final round appearance of the year.
The final in Top Alcohol Funny Car will feature two familiar faces on the NHRA Northeast Division tour, reining national champ Frank Manzo of Morganville, N.J., and Schenectady, N.Y., racer Bob Newberry. Manzo, the defending race champion, opened eliminations by defeating class newcomer Dan Pomponio of Berlin, N.J., before then taking out former North Central Division runner, Todd Veney of Indianapolis, Ind., in the semifinals. In his opening round contest, Newberry defeated Holbrook, Mass., racer Fred Tigges. In the semifinals, Newberry took out Whiteford, Md., racer Darrell Cox. The final at Cecil County Dragway will be the sixth time this year that the Manzo and Newberry have faced off in a final round. Manzo currently leads the head-to-head count 5 to 1.
Racing action in all categories will resume Friday, August 22, at Cecil County Dragway in conjunction with the final NHRA Northeast Division Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event scheduled to take place August 22-24. Competitors in Super Stock, Stock Eliminator, Super Comp, Super Gas and Super Street are scheduled to receive one qualifying pass before eliminations begin.
