MONTREAL, QC - DJ Kennington won Saturday night's CASCAR Super Series race
at Autodrome Old Milwaukee St-Eustache. The Snap On Tools / Castrol
Intrepid driver started sixth in the 200 lap 'Couche-Tard 200' at the flat,
4/10-mile Montreal-area oval and powered into the lead on lap 168 when he
drove underneath polesitter Brad Graham.
Graham had led every lap of the race until that point, but his car's
handling faded and he was unable to hold off Kennington. By lap 200,
Graham's Challenger Pontiac had slipped to fourth. Finishing second was
Schick Xtreme3 Pontiac racer Scott Steckly, of Milverton, ON. Steckly came
from eighth at the start and assumed second place when he got by Graham
with 22 laps to go.
The third and final podium position went to two-time and defending CASCAR
Super Series champion, Don Thomson Jr., in a borrowed car. The evening
prior to the 'Couche-Tard 200' Fitzpatrick Motorsports' tow vehicle, hauler
and race cars were stolen from their hotel parking lot, in nearby Laval.
In an amazing show of sportsmanship, Kennington made his second oval car
available to Thomson for the race, while John Fitzpatrick raced in a car
loaned to him by Neil Fair. On lap 154, while running second ahead of
Kennington, Thomson pulled aside to allow Kennington to assume the
runner-up position. Thomson later admitted that the move was a show of
'thanks' to Kennington, in recognition of his generosity for the loan of
the racecar.
Thomson reported that several teams offered the use of cars, uniforms and
equipment for the race. The veteran racer was overwhelmed by the generosity
and support displayed by his friends and competitors during a difficult
time. Based on his third-place finish, Thomson recovered the points lead,
after eight races, from Kerry Micks who made several pit stops during the
race and finished 13th, two laps down.
"I'm just so proud of our team and my dad who put together two MOPAR
engines that made it to the podium," said Kennington, after the race. "We
were happy to be able to loan a car to Donnie for the race and to have us
finish first and third in our cars says a lot about our team."
Just after time trials, Fitzpatrick Motorsports learned that their tow
vehicle and race hauler had been located and recovered 45 minutes outside
of Montreal. The race cars and the contents of the hauler were cleaned out,
except for the Home Hardware racing suit that Thomson was able to get into,
just prior to the start of the race.
