Dorricott Racing: Mid-Ohio Preview
LEXINGTON, Ohio (Aug. 6, 2003) - The last time Dorricott Racing
visited Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course was in 2001 with the Dayton Indy Lights
Championship. Simply stated, Dorricott Racing won. This weekend, Dorricott
Racing and driver Luis Diaz, of Mexico City, are looking to re-create the
same magic in round nine of the 12-race Toyota Atlantic Championship at the
driver-favorite Mid-Ohio Sports Car course.
The 30-lap (67.740 mile) Atlantic sprint around Mid-Ohio's
2.258-mile, 13-turn road course is scheduled to begin at 11:30 a.m. ET,
Sunday, August 10. This will be the 18th overall Toyota Atlantic
Championship appearance at Mid-Ohio since 1976, and it is the featured
support event for the Champ Car Grand Prix of Mid-Ohio later that day.
Diaz, who is currently ninth place in the Atlantic championship
with 59 points, collected 10 points at Trois-Rivieres in round eight last
Sunday and is well positioned to move up. Diaz only trails sixth-place Joey
Hand by nine points, 68-59, and is only 24 points behind fifth-place Aaron
Justus who has 83 points.
Dorricott Racing's history at Mid-Ohio is four-fold and dates back
to 1991 and 1994 with driver Bob Dorricott Jr. Current Formula 3000 driver
Townsend Bell, of San Luis Obispo, Calif., made it look easy in 2000 and
2001 in winning consecutive Dayton Indy Lights races. In fact, Bell
completed the 34-lap race in 2001 with a track record time of 50:19.940
minutes (90.365 mph) despite three yellow flags that totaled nine laps.
Bell, who started from the pole, not only led every lap but was also the
fastest driver each lap. Ironically, Bell broke his own track record of
88.072 mph set last year when he won his first career Indy Lights race at
Mid-Ohio in 2000.
This year's schedule is full for Atlantic drivers. It begins with a
Promoter Test Day on Thursday, August 7. The two sessions will be held from
9:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. and again from 2:00 - 6:00 p.m. The remainder of the
race track schedule (all times eastern) for Dorricott Racing is:
Fri., Aug. 8 - Practice: 12:15 - 12:45 p.m.
Provisional Qualifying: 3:45 - 4:15 p.m.
