Gordon and Bell?

Terry Borcheller returns to Watkins Glen International this week, looking to 
finish what he started in June.  The Phoenix driver and Belgian Didier Theys 
finished second in the Six Hours of the Glen Rolex Sports Car Series race on 
the 3.4-mile road course, after holding a commanding lead until the second-last 
lap of the race.  Borcheller says the track owes him a win, and he'll be happy 
to take it in this week's race on the shorter 2.45-mile course.

He may get an assist from four-time NASCAR Winston Cup champion Jeff Gordon 
of Charlotte, N.C.  Borcheller's car owner and co-driver, Forest Barber of Fort 
Worth, Tex., has approached Gordon about sharing driving duty in the No. 54 
Bell Motorsports Doran JE4 prototype, powered by a Chevrolet engine.

"There are some possibilities of Jeff Gordon driving the car," Borcheller 
said.  "Forest Barber and [the series sanctioning body] Grand-Am have been trying 
to get a response from Jeff Gordon.  With his Chevrolet links, there's a 
chance he will be able to do the race with me.  If it doesn't happen, Forest and I 
are ready to take on the task and do the best job we can."

With a long break between races, Florida-based Bell Motorsports has had time 
to fine-tune the No. 54 Doran.  "It's like a brand-new car," Borcheller said.  
"They've really done a lot of work over the last month.  They haven't made 
any changes, they just serviced the car really well.  They haven't had a chance 
since they took possession of the car to do a lot of the detailed items, so 
they've taken time to do that and the car should be beautiful."

But Borcheller said the team still has some homework to do for the Watkins 
Glen race.  "We're going to have a lot of work because we don't have a lot of 
on-track time before the race," he noted.  "Even though we were there earlier 
this year, our setup will be completely different because we weren't happy with 
the directon of the car at the six-hour race."

The team will have the luxury of focusing on only one car because the 
Grand-Am Cup series is not racing this weekend.  "It enables you to have a more 
intense focus," Borcheller acknowledged.  "But we've done double races on the same 
weekend for so long, and we've won in both cars, so that proves you can still 
have the focus to win [with two cars]."

The Rolex Sports Car Series race is scheduled for Friday, Aug. 8, following 
NASCAR Winston Cup qualifying.  Borcheller said the timing is a big bonus for 
his sponsors, K&N Performance Filters, Infinity2 Nutrition, Dark Dog, 
Alpinestars, Bell Helmets, Bob Bondurant School of High Performance Driving, Gatorz 
Eyewear and Goodyear.

"There will be a lot of spectators there," he said.  "It's really a perk for 
my sponsors to take advantage of the Winston Cup crowd.  The more people who 
are out there, the more excitement is generated, and that's great for everyone."

The Rolex Sports Car Series race is scheduled for Friday evening, Aug. 8, 
from about 6 pm to 8:30 pm on the 2.45-mile Watkins Glen International road 
course in Watkins Glen, N.Y.  The race will air on SPEED Channel on Sunday, Aug.
