UAW Region 1 to Dedicate New Indoor/Outdoor Pavilion, Aug. 7
WARREN, Mich., Aug. 6, 2003 -- Event: UAW Region 1 to dedicate new indoor/outdoor pavilion Date: Aug. 7, 2003 Time: 7 p.m. Location: UAW Region 1, 27800 George Merrelli Drive, Warren, MI Who: UAW Vice President Nate Gooden, UAW Region 1 Director Ken Terry, DaimlerChrysler Senior Vice President John Franciosi, Delta Dental CEO and President Tom Flezsar
The UAW will dedicate a 1,000-seat indoor/outdoor pavilion on Thursday, August 7 at 7 p.m. that will be available for community use, UAW Region 1 Director Ken Terry announced today.
The pavilion will be named the Nate Gooden UAW Region 1 Community and Retiree Center in honor of UAW Vice President Nate Gooden, who formerly served as director of Region 1. The facility will host a variety of open-to-the- public events, including concerts, athletic exhibitions, community meetings, political events and recreational activities.
"Members in our region have always been involved in community activities, and this beautiful new facility gives us a new way to reach out," Terry said. "This facility isn't only for UAW members. We invite the public to participate in the many events we will host here. "
A series of free swing band concerts co-sponsored by DaimlerChrysler and Delta Dental is now under way. The Aug. 7 dedication will precede a 7:30 p.m. concert.
The pavilion has additional seating beyond its 1,000 capacity, weather permitting. The region had hosted events in rented tents, but the new facility should save money over the long term, Terry said.
Already planned for the facility are boxing matches by Aztec Boxing, a Pontiac-based youth sports group, the popular annual classic car show on Sept. 21, and the Veterans' Standown on Oct. 30, which supplies medical screening and social services to needy vets.
