OWINGS MILLS, Md.--Aug. 5, 2003--While Rent-A-Wreck, the used car rental company, quietly chalks up its 30th year of providing low cost transportation to the American public, Tom Weum Rent-A-Wreck master franchisee for Scandinavia gathered his affiliates from the far reaches of Norway, Sweden, and Denmark to mark his own tenth anniversary becoming the third largest car rental company in Norway with 25 locations and the largest individual car rental facility in Norway. When Weum told friends and family that he would opening Rent-A-Wreck in his native land, many laughed, while some, concerned for the well being of their friend, cautioned Tom that he would have a difficult time competing with the larger rental car companies and succeeding in Oslo.
Rent-A-Wreck not only became successful in Oslo market, it eventually became the largest car rental operator in Oslo!
Volvo's make up a large portion of the Rent-A-Wreck fleet in Norway, and the Rent-A-Wreck name combined with Tom's high energy and charm have resulted in enormous press coverage and public acceptance. The largest daily paper in Oslo covered Tom's opening, and a highly respected business magazine did a feature story that compared Rent-A-Wreck favorably to its new car competition.
Written about a year after he opened, the journal anonymously rented one of Tom's Volvos, then had an independent mechanic perform a thorough evaluation on the car. The mechanic tested the Volvo's brakes, tires, engine and transmission for anything that would have made the car unsafe for a renter. The verdict? The headline on the front page of the prominent journal proclaimed 'Rent-A-Wreck? Used Car Rental as Good as Gold!'
In the last 30 years, Rent-A-Wreck has become a well known commodity in the US and internationally. Hollywood has long used Rent-A-Wreck's original location on Bundy & Pico Blvd. in LA to rent cars that blend in with traffic better than Limousines and high-end cars. Movie studios also employee Rent-A-Wreck when they need cars from the 60's and seventies. Outside of Hollywood, regular Rent-A-Wreck customers around the country know the company for used car rentals at reasonable prices, normally 20% less than their new car rental competition. In the last year, Rent-A-Wreck's name has been mentioned on Jay Leno's Tonite Show, the hit TV series Law and Order, and even the New York Times sneaking the company name into their crossword puzzle. The car rental company with the funny name has worked its way into the American lexicon, becoming one of the nation's most distinctive brands!
