Toyota and Lexus Divisions Both Record Best-Ever July Sales

TORRANCE, Calif., Aug. 1, 2003 -- Toyota Motor Sales (TMS), U.S.A., Inc., today reported best-ever July sales of 169,631, an increase of 4.5 percent over last July. Since its inception in October 1957, TMS has sold 30 million vehicles in the United States, a milestone set in July.

"We have been forecasting a strong second half, and July industry sales are a good sign of that happening," said Jim Press, TMS executive vice president and COO. "Tax cuts have taken hold and many of the economic indicators are positive, which bodes well for the automotive industry. Toyota is well positioned to capitalize on the recovering economy".

TMS passenger car and light trucks also recorded best-ever July sales of 89,339 and 80,292 units respectively. The Toyota Division posted best-ever July sales of 147,232, an increase of 3.0 percent, while CYTD sales reached 932,118 units, up 3.7 percent.

Sequoia scored an all-time best-ever sales month, up 18.2 percent, to 6,837. The Sienna van recorded strong monthly sales of 9,514, an increase of 10.9 percent, while the 4Runner mid-size SUV enjoyed sales of 10,415, up 43.3 percent.

The Scion xB, with its compact exterior and roomy interior, surpassed the 1,000-unit mark with sales of 1,065. The xA, the sleek subcompact five-door, sold 554 units.

The Lexus Division posted best-ever July sales of 22,399 vehicles, an increase of 16.0 percent. CYTD Lexus sales totaled 140,655 up 3.5 percent.
