Toyota and Lexus Divisions Both Record Best-Ever July Sales
TORRANCE, Calif., Aug. 1, 2003 -- Toyota Motor Sales (TMS), U.S.A., Inc., today reported best-ever July sales of 169,631, an increase of 4.5 percent over last July. Calendar-year-to-date (CYTD) sales total 1,072,773, up 3.7 percent over the same period last year. Since its inception in October 1957, TMS has sold 30 million vehicles in the United States, a milestone set in July.
"We have been forecasting a strong second half, and July industry sales are a good sign of that happening," said Jim Press, TMS executive vice president and COO. "Tax cuts have taken hold and many of the economic indicators are positive, which bodes well for the automotive industry. Toyota is well positioned to capitalize on the recovering economy".
TMS passenger car and light trucks also recorded best-ever July sales of 89,339 and 80,292 units respectively. The Toyota Division posted best-ever July sales of 147,232, an increase of 3.0 percent, while CYTD sales reached 932,118 units, up 3.7 percent.
Toyota passenger car sales had a best-ever July with 78,376 units sold. The Corolla compact sedan posted best-ever July sales of 31,476 an increase of 35.3 percent.
Toyota Division light trucks also posted best-ever July sales of 68,856, up 6.5 percent. The Highlander sport utility vehicle (SUV) led the way with best-ever July sales of 11,820, an increase of 16.2 percent over July 2002. Sequoia scored an all-time best-ever sales month, up 18.2 percent, to 6,837. The Sienna van recorded strong monthly sales of 9,514, an increase of 10.9 percent, while the 4Runner mid-size SUV enjoyed sales of 10,415, up 43.3 percent.
Scion, the new car marque from TMS that launched June 9 in California only, closed out its first full month of sales with 1,619 units sold in July. The Scion xB, with its compact exterior and roomy interior, surpassed the 1,000-unit mark with sales of 1,065. The xA, the sleek subcompact five-door, sold 554 units.
The Lexus Division posted best-ever July sales of 22,399 vehicles, an increase of 16.0 percent. CYTD Lexus sales totaled 140,655 up 3.5 percent.
The Lexus Division's record-setting month was led by best-ever July light truck sales of 11,436, an increase of 77.4 percent. The newly redesigned RX 330 luxury SUV led the Lexus sales charge with best-ever July sales of 8,372, up 45.6 percent. The GX 470 luxury utility vehicle continued to post strong sales with 2,403 units sold.
Sales of North American-built vehicles accounted for 59.7 percent of total July sales. There were 26 selling days this sales month compared to 25 last July.
