#10 Pontiac driver Johnny Benson and his teammates persevered through
a long 500 miles Sunday at Pocono International Raceway, but when the checkered
flag finally fell they left the flat 2.5-mile oval with a very hard-earned
20th-place finish.

"We didn't run that well today, but we worked and worked and worked to get it
better and we did," Benson said. "We never gave up on it and with some good
strategy and pit stops we walked out of here with a pretty decent finish. "

Benson started 29th on Sunday and fell back through the field in the early
going. At lap 47 leader Ryan Newman lapped Benson but just a lap later a
caution flag allowed Benson to slip by Newman and regain the lost lap.

By being the last car on the lead lap and plans to make major chassis changes,
Benson stayed on the track to collect the five extra points for leading a lap.
He came to the pits after leading that lap and returned to the track in 36th.

By lap 108 he had moved to 29th, but leader Tony Stewart was on the back bumper
of the Pontiac when a yellow flag flew and Benson remained on the
lead lap.

"We had some timely yellows today," Benson said. "It's about time. We have had
some bad breaks with them earlier in the year. I guess all this stuff does even
out over time."

Benson returned to the track after pitting and slowly worked his way up through
the field.

Benson crossed the finish line in 20th.

Ryan Newman edged Kurt Busch for the victory on Sunday.

Benson and his teammates return to action Sunday at Indianapolis in the
Brickyard 400.
