KENT, Wash. (July 25, 2003) - Not one Funny Car managed to produce a
4-second run in today's first qualifying session, as cars struggled in the
heat to get down a bumpy race track. Scotty Cannon, in the Oakley Funny Car,
was one of the few who made it down the track, taking the No. 6 position
with a 5.226/264.34 lap, just one 10th of a second out of first place.

The second round was not as productive, as Cannon and crew chief Phil Shuler
tried to improve on that lap. Cannon smoked the tires, however, on the hot
and slick track, posting an 8.719-second lap at 92.11 mph, which dropped him
to No. 14.

"We just got too aggressive," he said. "We tried too hard. We tried to go
too fast for what it let us do."
