Turner on provisional pole for the Canadian Tire 100 CASCAR race at the
Vancouver Indy

VANCOUVER, BC - In 2001, Al Turner won the inaugural CASCAR Super Series
race at the Vancouver Molson Indy from the pole position. The Barrie, ON
racer is hoping that history repeats itself in 2003. Following the first
round of qualifying for Saturday afternoon's Canadian Tire 100, Turner
holds the provisional pole after lapping the 12-turn Concord Pacific Place
street circuit in a time of 1:24.511, which translates into a speed of
122.086 km/h.
Second quickest - as he was in the morning practice session - was Fastline
Motorsports Chevy driver Jeff Lapcevich, at 1:24.640 / 121.900 km/h. Apollo
Motorsports teammates Kevin Dowler and Trevor Seibert were third and
fourth, respectively.
Just who will start on the pole for the Canadian Tire 100 is still very
much up in the air. A quick, 15-minute second round of qualifying will take
place Saturday morning at 8:30 a.m. Speculation is that the cooler
temperatures will translate into quicker lap times. The field for the
feature race, which starts at 3:45 p.m. on Saturday, will be determined by
the drivers' best times in the two qualifying sessions.
So even though Turner will probably have to improve on his Friday
afternoon effort if he's to earn the top starting position for the Canadian
Tire 100, he's optimistic that he's starting to hit his stride in the
MOPAR-powered Blue Streak Intrepid.
"We battled transmission trouble in Toronto and had clutch trouble this
morning [in practice] but Dave [Whitlock] and the guys are working hard to
put a good piece under me, and I think that's evident now," said Turner.
"In qualifying, we put four new tires on the car and got one good lap in
before the session was red-flagged. I don't think that time will hold up in
the morning because typically, it's cooler then, which should make for
faster times. We're going to have to come back in the morning and see what
we can do about keeping the Blue Streak car out front."
Just 15 minutes into the 30-minute qualifying period, Jim Lapcevich
crashed heavily, dislodging a concrete barrier. The Hamilton, ON racer
emerged unhurt from the wreck, but the incident ended the session. Ron
Beauchamp Jr. posted the ninth-fastest lap of the afternoon session after
he and his MOPAR Parts Intrepid team thrashed all afternoon to repair the
front end of their car, which was damaged during the morning practice.

CASCAR NOTEBOOK: On Tuesday, July 22, CASCAR Super Series veteran Mark
Dilley and his wife Taunja became parents for the second time. Faith Taylor
Dilley weighed in at six pounds, 14 ounces and is currently at home, in
Barrie, Ontario with her mom and her older sister Bryden. Mark will 'meet'
Faith Taylor as soon as he can get home after participating in Saturday
afternoon's Canadian Tire 100, in Vancouver... For the second year in a
row, the CASCAR Super Series drivers and teams played host to the kids from
the Children's Wish Foundation and Canuck Place. The youngsters ate in the
CASCAR paddock, got a tour of the CASCAR stock cars, and were 'paired' with
drivers for the afternoon qualifying session. Several CASCAR racers took to
the track with the names of their 'co-pilots' over the windows. This event
is turning into an annual highlight of CASCAR's appearance at the Vancouver
Indy, as it's a thrill for all of the kids and for everyone associated with
CASCAR.
