Last Lap Pass Gives Hales'
Sportsmen Win To Sorce Jr.
By John Shea
Franklin, Wis., July 19--Defending track champion Don Sorce Jr. was able
to edge Jeff Tondryk in a photo-finish to win the sportsmen feature at the
Hales Corners Speedway on Saturday night.
The night was to have had a UMP late model feature as well, however, the
visiting IRA Outlaw Sprint Series pushed the program back to midnight, at
which time the city of Franklin police department closed the track down for the
night.
Tondryk grabbed the lead at the start of the 20-lap sportsmen feature,
which went under yellow for the first time on lap three when Joe Altenhofen
looped his car in turn three. When the race resumed Bob Brent shot past Tondryk
to take command and a lap later the amber lights flickered again as Chad Tschan
bounced off the wall in turn one.
Roger Lee pitted from third place during the yellow and when the race got
back underway Brent led Tondryk, Sorce Jr., Dave Gorny and Pat Heaney.
Tschan brought out his second yellow of the night on lap seven when he spun in turn
four.
The battle at the front of the field was tight between Brent, Tondryk and
Sorce Jr., with Sorce Jr. going three wide on the outside in turns three and
four to take the lead on lap nine. Brent began to fade as Mark Lewis and
Gorny joined the lead group in third and fourth, respectively.
Tondryk batted back on Sorce Jr. and used the inside line along the
frontstretch to retake the lead at lap 15. Sorce Jr. was not going to be
dismissed, however, and the two leaders battled door to door for the final four and a
half laps. Exiting turn four on the final lap, Sorce Jr. was able to find the
bite his Sorce Services Taurus needed along the outside and just pip Tondryk
by a bumper at the finish line to pick up the victory. Gorny got by Lewis for
third in the final results, with Don Scheffler rounding out the top five..
Racing continues at the historic third-mile Hales Corners Speedway oval
on Saturday night, July 26th with a full program of UMP late model, sportsmen,
modified and Hales Whales racing, plus the 4-cylinder Mud Puppies. The night
will feature twin 30-lap feature events for the UMP late models along with the
final round of the N & S Towing triple crown for the Hales Whales. Time
trials are at 6:15 p.m., with racing immediately following qualifying. Hales
Corners Speedway is located on Hwy. 100, one half-mile south of Forest Home Avenue
in Franklin, next to Hiller Ford. For more information, call (414) 778-4710
