Whitlock wins the MOPAR Parts 300; Thomson re-takes the Super Series points
lead

CALGARY, AB - Dave Whitlock won his record-tying third MOPAR Parts 300 on
Sunday afternoon at Calgary’s Race City Motorsport Park. The Avenue West
ACDelco / NMT driver started eighth in the field of 28 who competed in the
300-lap affair at the high-banked, half-mile oval and patiently managed his
car and tires throughout the race.
Set to record a podium finish, Whitlock was the beneficiary of his
teammate’s misfortune, with just 13 laps to go. Whitlock Motorsports driver
Mark Dilley (NTN Intrepid) held a commanding five-second lead as the race
wound down, but got caught up in an incident with a lapped car, and spun
from first place. As a result of Dilley’s bad luck, Whitlock assumed the
lead and went on to win his third MOPAR Parts 300, by .566 seconds over the
other three-time Calgary National event race winner Peter Gibbons (Canadian
Tire Chevy). DJ Kennington (Snap On / Castrol Intrepid) finished third in
the weekend finale, and joined fellow MOPAR-powered driver Whitlock on the
post-race podium.
Over 6,200 fans were on hand on Sunday afternoon at Race City, bringing to
over 12,000 the three-day total for the MOPAR Parts 500 Race Weekend.
"You put yourself in contention to win, and sometimes unfortunate things
happen [to others]," said Whitlock, who also won the season opening MOPAR
300 at Delaware Speedway Park, in May. "We were up there at the end and
capitalized on my teammate’s [Dilley’s] bad luck."
Two-time and defending Super Series champion Don Thomson recovered the
points lead during the weekend, based on his fourth-place finish in the
MOPAR 300 and his second-place result in his 100-lap qualifying sprint
race, on Friday night. UFCW Taurus driver Kerry Micks entered the weekend
as the points leader, but now finds himself three points back of the Home
Hardware Chevy driver, in second place, as the series heads to Vancouver.
