Dilley, Kennington and Gibbons share qualifying glory on Friday of the
MOPAR Parts 500 Race Weekend, at Calgary’s Race City Motorsport Park
CALGARY, AB - The opening events of the MOPAR Parts 500 Race Weekend took
place Friday night at Calgary’s Race City Motorsport Park. Time trials and
Twin 100 Qualifying Sprint Races set the majority of the starting grid for
Sunday’s MOPAR Parts 300, at the high-banked, half-mile oval.
In time trials, held Friday afternoon at Race City, former CASCAR National
champion Mark Dilley turned in the fastest lap of the 29 drivers who
participated. The NTN Bearings MOPAR driver circled the Race City oval in
17.570 seconds (102.447 mph). Peter Gibbons was second quickest. As a
reward for their time trial speeds, Dilley and Gibbons will start first and
second, respectively, on Sunday.
Based on time trial results, the field of contenders was split into two
groups for Friday night’s 100-lap sprint races. In the first, St. Thomas,
ON racer DJ Kennington started sixth in his Snap On / Castrol Intrepid and
moved steadily to the front. He passed polesitter and race leader Dilley on
lap 80 and held the position for the remaining 20 laps. At the finish,
Kennington’s MOPAR-powered Intrepid finished ahead of Brad Graham and
current Super Series points leader Kerry Micks, who started sixth and
seventh, respectively, in the 100 lapper.
In the second Qualifying Sprint Race, polesitter Gibbons relinquished the
lead to Don Thomson for the first 29 laps, but was able to pass the
two-time and defending National champion, at that point, and never looked
back. Thomson later said he wasn’t happy with the handling of his Home
Hardware Chevy, and he plans to make several significant changes prior to
the start of Sunday’s main event. Gibbons’ Canadian Tire Chevy cruised to a
comfortable win over Thomson and Dave Jacombs. Happy with his car’s
prospects for a record fourth MOPAR Parts 300 win on Sunday, Gibbons said
he hardly broke a sweat during his heat win.
The remainder of the starting grid for Sunday’s MOPAR Parts 300 will be
determined tonight (Saturday) at Race City. The Final Qualifier race is
scheduled to start at 7:00 p.m. and will include nine cars who have not yet
secured starting positions for Sunday’s 300 lapper. Calgary’s Wheeler Boys
will start on the pole for the Final Qualifier race.
