Garmin's New StreetPilot Series Makes Car Navigation as Easy as a Sunday Drive
OLATHE, Kan., July 16 -- Garmin International Inc., a unit of Garmin Ltd. , today introduced the StreetPilot 2610 and StreetPilot 2650, cutting-edge portable automotive navigation systems each featuring a high-resolution color display with touchscreen, a CompactFlash(R) data card slot, ultra-fast map drawing and routing, voice prompt technology, and a remote control. In addition, the StreetPilot 2650 includes a built-in solid state gyro and an interface to a vehicle odometer system, allowing it to function seamlessly in urban canyons and other areas where GPS signals are obscured.
"The StreetPilot 2610 and 2650 offer new features to in-car navigation," said Gary Kelley, Garmin's director of marketing. "With touch screen technology, remote control, and voice prompted turn-by-turn navigation, finding your destination has never been easier. In addition, the solid state gyro and odometer interfaces of the StreetPilot 2650 enable the same state-of- the-art guidance capability of premium in-dash systems at a value price."
The StreetPilot 2610 and 2650 build on the innovation of Garmin's popular StreetPilot III and puts GPS navigation literally at the driver's fingertips. Thanks to the bright, color LCD display with touchscreen, motorists will be able to choose destinations and configure the device through a series of intuitive, touch-sensitive onscreen menus. Both products include a wireless infrared alphanumeric remote control, which allows easy operation of the device from a distance. The unit is completely portable and more compact than its predecessor, so drivers can move the unit from vehicle to vehicle with ease.
The StreetPilot 2610 and 2650 incorporate a powerful ARM 920T microprocessor that makes route calculation and map redraw faster than ever. In addition to a comprehensive routable basemap containing interstates, highways, and major roads, the unit includes a 128 MB CompactFlash(R) data card and a USB interface to quickly load detailed turn-by-turn street information and points of interest using the latest edition of MapSource City Navigator. Each unit comes with full U.S. street-level map coverage and expanded Canadian map coverage so drivers can travel almost anywhere in the U.S. or Canada with confidence.
Key features of the StreetPilot 2610 include: -- Powerful ARM 920T based CPU -- 3.3" W x 1.7" H, high-resolution color touchscreen display with photosensor-controlled backlight level -- Turn-by-turn automatic route generation and voice prompts (up to 50 stored routes, 500 waypoints, and 2000 track log points) -- Garmin's proven 12-channel GPS receiver for reliable, fast positioning -- Built-in routable basemap of North and South America including state and country borders, cities, towns, highways, major metropolitan thoroughfares, coastlines, lakes, and rivers -- Mapsource City Navigator featuring detailed turn-by-turn street level data and points of interest which may be downloaded to the StreetPilot 2610/2650 via a fast USB interface -- 128 MB CompactFlash(R) data card with expansion capability (accepts CompactFlash(R) Type I or II compatible data cards) -- Built-in patch antenna with an MCX-type connector for optional external antenna
The addition of the StreetPilot 2610 and StreetPilot 2650 further solidifies Garmin as a leading provider of portable auto navigation solutions offering the performance of more expensive in-car navigation systems at a value price. "Garmin's long term strategy is to offer fully integrated in- vehicle navigation solutions to automotive OEM and aftermarket customers that leverage the technologies and value developed for the portable market," added Kelley.
The StreetPilot 2610 and StreetPilot 2650 will be available at popular consumer retail stores in August 2003 at a suggested retail price of $1,166.65 and $1,399.98, respectively. The odometer interface of the Street Pilot 2650 requires installation by an aftermarket automotive electronics dealer. Both units ship standard with an infrared alphanumeric remote controller, Mapsource City Navigator, 128 MB CompactFlash(R) data card, AC adapter, PC/USB cable, external speaker with 12-volt adapter cable, dash and friction mounts, carrying case, owner's manual, and quick reference guide.
