Lord Corporation Launches UK MetalJacket(TM) Corrosion Control Technology Pilot Line to Streamline, Upgrade Metal Treatment Processes
Industry-Changing Technology Addresses Key Environmental Issues, Reduces Waste
CARY, N.C., July 15 -- Lord Corporation, which pioneered MetalJacket(TM) corrosion control coating technology, is commissioning a new MetalJacket pilot line at the company's Manchester, England, facility. The line will be capable of applying the company's unique MetalJacket autodeposition coating technology to customer parts for sampling and evaluation.
"The MetalJacket pilot line is a new addition to our European facility that enables us to apply MetalJacket corrosion control coatings for the European market," said Mark Weih, Ph.D., Manager, Business Development. "Previously, steel parts from customers were sent to the U.S. for coating and evaluation. By having this line operational in Europe, we can now respond to our customers in the European market with much faster turnaround times."
In addition to the MetalJacket pilot line, the UK laboratory has undergone a major testing equipment upgrade. This enables testing and performance evaluation of MetalJacket corrosion control coated parts at the UK laboratory.
The unique MetalJacket metal treatment and coating system eliminates the cost and environmental issues associated with zinc phosphatizing, zinc dichromate, or other heavy metal containing pretreatments, while providing excellent corrosion protection. MetalJacket coating systems are applied by autodeposition, a process by which the coating interacts with an active ferrous steel surface to provide a uniform barrier coating over the entire part. This uniform coating is obtained regardless of part shape or size, and without the need for electric assistance, or rinse steps. Curing temperatures are lower than many other coating systems, further reducing costs.
The MetalJacket corrosion control system has two layers for optimum uniformity, corrosion protection, and adhesion: MetalJacket 1100 metal treatment, and MetalJacket 2110 coating.
The MetalJacket 1100 metal treatment is a regulatory friendly, aqueous, autodepositing, no-rinse metal treatment that replaces the zinc phosphating step and prepares mild steel for the MetalJacket coating.
MetalJacket 2110 coating also is applied by autodepositing a second corrosion resistant film over MetalJacket 1100 metal treatment. MetalJacket 2110 coating provides a tough protective coating for all of the exposed areas of the part. MetalJacket 2110 coating forms uniform thin films, even on complex surfaces such as stampings, tubes, and welded parts. When used as a system with the MetalJacket 1100 metal treatment, MetalJacket 2110 coating provides excellent corrosion protection, passing most automotive corrosion specifications.
The MetalJacket 1100/2110 corrosion control coating system also has a dual function for rubber to metal bonded components. The system replaces zinc phosphating and rubber-to-metal primers, while providing excellent flexibility and resistance to swaging or calibration for bonded rubber bushings with excellent corrosion protection.
The aqueous MetalJacket system is environmentally friendly. It contains no hazardous volatile organic components and generates no hazardous wastes or sludge such as in zinc phosphatizing, and it uses no toxic acids or heavy metals such as in zinc dichromate or zinc/nickel plating.
Additionally, the MetalJacket corrosion control coating system meets automotive substance use restrictions, and the European Union End of Life Vehicle directive.
"With the opening of this line, customers now can evaluate MetalJacket corrosion control coatings to their automotive or non-automotive specifications," Weih said. "Along with the addition of the pilot coating line and facility upgrades, we've added technical and commercial personnel to run the line, coat customer parts, and demonstrate the performance benefits of this innovative technology."
