USF Logistics Services Receives ISO Certification; Zero Nonconformances Cited

OAK BROOK, Ill.--July 14, 2003--USF Logistics Services Inc., (www.usfc.com) an operating company of USF Corporation , has received certification under ISO 9001:2000 for both its corporate operations and Transportation Management business unit. The International Organization for Standardization, or ISO, is a network of national standards institutes of some 140 countries. In a rarity for ISO evaluations, USF Logistics was recommended for certification with zero nonconformances, i.e., there were no areas of company procedures or performance that needed to be upgraded prior to official certification. This initial certification marks the start of an aggressive campaign to have each of the USF Logistics business units comply with the stringent ISO standards by the end of 2003.
"We made a commitment to achieve ISO certification, and are proud to be recognized for our efforts," said Thomas Lilly, President and Chief Executive Officer of USF Logistics Services. "This is an outward symbol of the kind of quality and reliability we strive to deliver to each of our customers."
USF Logistics began working toward corporate office certification approximately six months ago, as responsibilities were assigned, a timeline established, and written procedures developed. A consulting firm, International Management Systems Marketing, known for its work as an ISO "coach," helped shepherd USF Logistics through the process of meeting the rigorous requirements.
Other USF Logistics business units will be targeted in succession, including Ocean Services, Dedicated Fleet, Cross Docking, and Contract Warehousing. "We intend to be ISO certified, companywide, by year-end," said Gary King, USF Logistics Director, Support Services. "Having our corporate offices go through the certification process first helps set the example for achieving the same high standards throughout the rest of our business units."
ISO 9001 has become an international reference for quality requirements in business-to-business dealings, specifically in management systems.
