RailAmerica Reports June 2003 Carloads
BOCA RATON, Fla.--July 8, 2003--RailAmerica, Inc. today reported its carloads (including intermodal units) for June 2003. As compared to the same period in 2002, June 2003 North American "same railroad" carloads increased 1.6% and Chilean carloads increased 24.4%, while Australian carloads decreased 26.2% due to the impact of the previously announced drought. "Same railroad" totals exclude carloads associated with railroads, or portions of railroads, sold or acquired by the Company after January 2002.Consolidated Carloads
Consolidated carloads for June 2003 increased 1.0% to 113,581, from 112,417 in June 2002. On a "same railroad" basis, June 2003 carloads were relatively constant at 112,176, compared to 112,417 in 2002. Year-to-date through June 30, 2003, total carloads were 703,793, down 1.5% from 714,355 in 2002. On a "same railroad" basis, year-to-date carloads decreased 1.1% to 702,388, from 710,345 in 2002. Positive year-to-date carloads at North America and Chile were more than offset by drought-impacted Australian carloads, which were down 29,969 cars versus 2002.
North American Carloads
Total North American carloads for June 2003 were 90,562, up 3.2% from 87,725 in June 2002. On a "same railroad" basis, June 2003 carloads increased 1.6% to 89,157, from 87,725 in 2002. For the month, strong petroleum, food products and other carloads were partially offset by lower auto, agricultural and intermodal carloads. Year-to-date through June 30, 2003, total carloads were 555,069, up 1.2% from 548,704 in 2002. On a "same railroad" basis, year-to-date carloads increased 1.6% to 553,664, from 544,694 in 2002.
International Carloads
For June 2003, international carloads were 23,019, down 6.8% from 24,692 in June 2002. For the month, traffic in Chile was up 24.4% due to increased metallic ores and chemicals carloads, while Australia traffic was down 26.2% due to the severe drought affecting grain and intermodal shipments. Australia's June 2003 agricultural shipments were 1,670 carloads, 68.0% lower than the 5,211 carloads in June 2002. Year-to-date through June 30, 2003, total international carloads were 148,724, down 10.2% from 165,651 in 2002.
Historically, the Company has found that carload information may be indicative of freight revenues on its railroads, but may not be indicative of total revenues, operating expenses, operating income or net income. Attached is a comparison of consolidated and segment carloads by commodity group for the month and year-to-date ended June 30, 2003 and 2002.
