Meijer Backs ASA Event in Michigan
Pendleton, Ind. (July 3, 2003) – The ASA Racing Series event at Berlin Raceway in
Marne, Mich. on Saturday, August 2 will be known as the Meijer 250 presented by
BFGoodrich Tires. It is the 11th race on the 17 event 2003 schedule and will be
televised live on SPEED Channel at 9 p.m. (Eastern)
Meijer is a family-owned and operated grocery and general merchandise retailer
operating 156 stores throughout the Midwest. The company has been involved with
ASA Racing since the late 1990s with both event and team sponsorships.
“We are already involved with both Berlin Raceway and ASA Racing,” said Connie
Castro, promotions and partnerships specialist for Meijer. “This specific event brings
three entities [Meijer, ASA and Berlin] together. Our demographics almost mirror each
other, and racing is fast becoming the No. 1 spectator sport in the country. With live
exposure afforded on SPEED Channel and the tremendous fan following at Berlin we
are thrilled to have our name associated with this event.”
Meijer currently serves as primary sponsor of the No. 11 Go Go Motor Sports team
Chevrolet Monte Carlo driven by Toby Porter of Greenville, South Carolina. In 2002
David Stremme drove the entry to a pair of victories, both coming in his home state of
Indiana. He won at Salem Speedway and Indianapolis Raceway Park en route to a final
fourth place finish in the championship point’s standings.
Red Baron Pizza, Stouffer’s, Tyson and Edy’s Ice Cream are associate sponsors for the
Go Go Motor Sports team and their respective products are available at all Meijer
locations in Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, Illinois and Kentucky.
Driver Toby Porter and the No. 11 Meijer Chevrolet will make an appearance at the
Meijer store at 3757 Plainfield Ave. NE, Grand Rapids, Mich., on Friday, Aug. 1 from 5-7
p.m.
For the second straight year, Meijer, in partnership with Go-Go Motorsports, is the
sponsor and promoter of the ASA Pace Car Giveaway Sweepstakes. The lucky winner
will receive the dark-purple 2002 Pontiac Grand Prix Pace Car, one-night hotel
accommodations for two adults and two tickets to the National ASA Racing Awards
Banquet at Caesars Casino and Hotel in Elizabeth, Ind. and $700 in travel and spending
money. Total value for the winner’s prize is $22,050.
The Meijer 250 presented by BFGoodrich Tires will mark the 38th visit to the West
Michigan facility since 1981. A who’s who of stock car racing greats have competed at
and won on the fairgrounds track in the interim. Michigan greats Bob Senneker, Mike
Eddy, Butch Miller and Johnny Benson Jr. are among the winners through the years.
