Sharon Whitcomb, Lynn Neily and James Meyers of Timken's aerospace government customer support team accepted the bronze medal from the commander of the supply center, Air Force Brigader General James P. Totsch. "We are certainly honored to be regarded as one of their top suppliers," said Ms. Whitcomb, principal account representative. "It's a true testament of the work ethic and dedication to customer service that Timken associates demonstrate every day."

Timken supplies cylindrical and tapered roller bearings and ball bearings to the Department of Defense and other government agencies, primarily for applications in flight hardware.

Firms that qualify as Automated Best Value System medallists have met stringent quality and delivery requirements established by the Defense Logistics. A computerized system, the Automated Best Value collects a vendor's past performance data and translates it into a numeric score, ranging from zero to a perfect 100. Over 700 people were in attendance representing 500 companies.

To be eligible, vendors must have shipped 10 or more contract lines for Defense Supply Center Richmond during a twelve-month rating period. To qualify for a gold medal, the contractor must have had a perfect score of 100. A score of 99.0 through 99.9 earned a silver; and those vendors with scores ranging from 98.0 through 98.9 were awarded bronze medals.

"Our success is a product of Timken associates' ingenuity, experience and dedication to excellence," says Ron Menning, vice president - aerospace and defense. "We are delighted with the recognition, but are dedicated to continuously improving our processes and achieving the gold metal status."

The supply center, located in Richmond, VA., purchases nearly 900,000 items used by military and other government agencies. These items include a mix of military-unique and commercially available items supporting 1,300 major weapons systems.

The Timken Company ( www.timken.com ) is a leading international manufacturer of highly engineered bearings, alloy and specialty steels and components, and a provider of related products and services. Following its February 2003 acquisition of The Torrington Company, Timken employs 28,000 people worldwide in operations in 29 countries. In 2002, the combined companies had sales of approximately $3.8 billion.
