Annual Visit to Legendary Berlin Set for August 2
Pendleton, Ind. (July 3, 2002) – One of the most anticipated events on each of the
ASA Racing Series calendars will take place on Saturday, August 2 at Berlin Raceway in
Marne, Mich. The Meijer 250 Presented by BFGoodrich Tires marks the 38th time the
series that builds champion has waged war at the .438-mile.
In the 2002 event at Berlin, three-time ASA Champion Butch Miller made his return,
leading the final 97 laps to score the victory, his second consecutive checkered flag at
Berlin Raceway.
Miller, who took over the driving chores on the No. 04 ASI Limited Chevrolet for the
Indianapolis-based SS Racing, started on the pole and grabbed the lead when all the
leaders pitted on the 203rd circuit. The pole and victory were both the 44th of his storied
ASA career and delighted the capacity crowd.
At the conclusion of the night, just as he had done in 2001, Miller climbed on the roof of
his winning car and raised his arms in jubilation. Miller last won an ASA race the
previous season at Berlin. For the second consecutive season, Miller broke a five-race
winning streak for one of ASA Racing’s young guns. In 2001, Miller’s win broke a run of
five wins in a row by Johnny Sauter and in 2002 stopped the streak of Joey Clanton.
Miller said the ASI team gave him a great car and did an excellent work on the last of
three pit stops.
“I was able to pass seven cars in the pits to take the lead, he said. “Two weeks ago this
deal wasn’t even in the works. It’s great to win in front of the home crowd. I learned how
to turn this track from Bob Senneker. Bob didn’t know he was teaching me, but I
followed him around here for many laps. Senneker is the king.”
Miller had to avoid an incident on lap 199 that resulted in the leader pitting and him
claiming the lead. Miller was going inside the lapped car of Jeff Emery when the two
touched and Emery collected Chris Wimmer. Miller finished 1.248 seconds ahead of
Gary St. Amant with Garvey, Dave Sensiba and Todd Kluever filling out the top-five
finishers.
