BACKGROUND:
AAA predicts this year's July 4th travel to be the heaviest in 9 years; 37.4 million people will be traveling 50 miles or more from home. Of these travelers, 32.6 million plan to drive to their holiday weekend destinations -- up 2 percent from last year's totals.
As Americans head off on a family vacation or just a day trip to the beach, experts recommend that drivers be prepared for any type of roadside emergency. Items like bottled water, a tire inflator such as Fix-A-Flat, tire pressure gauge, jumper cables, road flares, safety matches, flashlight and extra batteries, tools, pocketknife, safety vest fire extinguisher (16 oz.), pen and paper, "Help" sign or auto distress flag and a travel first aid kit can help in the event of a roadside emergency.
After creating a car care kit and before actually using the kit in an emergency situation, drivers should take some time to familiarize themselves with the items and learn how to use them properly.
