Hales Corners UMP LM
Summernat'ls To Moyer
By John Shea
Franklin, Wis., June 24--Billy Moyer from Batesville, Ark. held off a
late-race challenge from Dan Schlieper amidst lapped traffic to win the second round
of the 2003 UMP Late Model Summernationals on Wednesday night at the historic
Hales Corners Speedway.
Fast qualifier and dash winner Jeep Van Wormer jumped into the lead at the
start of the 40-lap, $6,000-to-win feature ahead of Rick Scheffler, Moyer,
Schlieper and Pete Parker.  Moyer immediately went to work on Scheffler and got
past for the runner-up spot on lap six.
Van Wormer's lead was quickly erased as Moyer had his car working perfectly
on the dry-slick third-mile track.  On lap 12 Moyer worked under Van Wormer
exiting turn two and took the lead up the backstretch.  Four laps later Moyer
began to lap the tailenders and on lap 18 Schlieper demoted Van Wormer to third.
Wendell Wallace joined the frontrunners at halfway and by lap 25 was up to
third behind Moyer and Schlieper.  Van Wormer, meanwhile, was under attack from
Parker, who moved past and into the fourth spot with 10 laps remaining.
Moyer's advantage on Schlieper began to dwindle with five laps remaining when
he ran up on a pack of slower cars.  With Schlieper breathing down his neck,
Moyer finally put the boot to Gordie Seegert's 14th-place car on lap 37 and
opened up a three-car length advantage.  It proved to be all he needed as he was
able to keep Schlieper at bay in the final two and half laps and pick up the
popular win.  Wallace finished third, with Parker fourth and Billy Drake fifth
after Van Wormer faded to sixth in the final five circuits.
NASCAR Winston Cup star Ken Schrader was in attendance and started the main
event as a promoter's option after a flat tire in his semi-feature prevented
him from advancing to the main event.  Schrader ended his night in the 18th
position.
Racing continues at the Hales Corners Speedway on Saturday, June 28 with a
full program of UMP late model, sportsmen, modified and Hales Whales racing,
plus the 4-cylinder Mud Puppies, is on tap for West Allis Salvage Night.  The
night will be highlighted by a 30-lap feature for the high-powered UMP late
models and the second round of the Da Boys Pro Graphics Modified Triple Crown.
Time trials are at 6:15 p.m., with racing immediately following qualifying.
Hales Corners Speedway is located on Hwy. 100, one half-mile south of Forest Home
