Gibbons wins second straight Super Series race, in Sunday's 'Dodge Canada
Day Shootout, presented by MOPAR' at Cayuga
HAMILTON, ON Peter Gibbons collected his second consecutive CASCAR Super
Series win, on Sunday evening, at Cayuga Speedway. The Canadian Tire Chevy
driver started on the pole and led all but a dozen laps of the 'Dodge
Canada Day Shootout, presented by MOPAR'.
For the final 105 laps, he was hounded by runner-up Pete Vanderwyst, who
was making his first Super Series start since suffering a ruptured appendix
shortly after his fifth-place finish in the season opener at Delaware
Speedway, in May. With 50 laps remaining in Sunday's race at the 5/8-mile
Cayuga oval, Gibbons didn't think his tires were up to the task of holding
off Vanderwyst for the final segment of the race. The Stouffville, ON racer
actually planned to make a pitstop to address his loose handing condition,
but was talked out of doing so by his crew chief.
The call turned out to be a winning decision, as Gibbons was able to hold
off Vanderwyst, despite the St. Thomas, ON racer's best attempts to wrestle
the lead away from the two-time National champion. Exiting the final turn,
on lap 200, Vanderwyst gave Gibbons a bump. Both lunged for the line, with
Gibbons edging Vanderwyst by less than two-tenths of a second at the
checkered flag.
Kerry Micks, the runner-up in the championship chase, was third in the
'Dodge Canada Day Shootout, presented by MOPAR', after narrowly edging the
MOPAR-powered Intrepid of DJ Kennington. Three-time CARQUEST Sportsman
Series champion Steve Robblee rounded out the top-five finishers.
A trio of NASCAR Winston Cup racers took part in Sunday's race at Cayuga.
Kenny Wallace finished 18th in the 37-car field, despite receiving a 'stop
and go' penalty for rough driving. Sterling Marlin drove the Beauchamp
Motorsports-prepared Coor's Light MOPAR to a 23rd-place result, while
Geoffrey Bodine battled an ill-handling car for most of the day, and came
home 32nd in the final 200-lap segment.
During qualifying for the 'Dodge Canada Day Shootout, presented by MOPAR',
Peter Gibbons set the fastest time, with a lap of 21.553 seconds around the
5/8-mile Cayuga oval. Kerry Micks was second fastest at 21.598 seconds. By
posting the two fastest times during time trials, Gibbons and Micks earned
the front two spots for their respective 50-lap qualifying sprint races, as
well as for the 200-lap feature race.
In the first 'Twin 50', Gibbons led early until Dave Whitlock took control
at the one-third point of the race. The three-time National champion held
the lead the rest of the way, narrowing edging Pete Vanderwyst. Don Thomson
was third, despite engine troubles that forced to him change engines prior
to the start of the 200-lap finale. Kerry Micks started on the pole for the
second 'Twin 50' and led the first 42 laps, at which point the UFCW Taurus
driver ran out of gas and fell off the pace, thus handing the lead to DJ
Kennington, who guided his MOPAR-powered Intrepid to the win. Brad Graham
finished second, ahead of the MOPAR trio of Ron Beauchamp Jr. Neil Fair and
NASCAR star Sterling Marlin.
CASCAR NOTEBOOK: The third round of the CASCAR Super Series the 'Exide
