Herta Finishes 14th in Rain Shortened Richmond Race
RICHMOND, Va. (June 28, 2003) — Bryan Herta, behind the wheel of the #27
Archipelago/Motorola Dallara/Honda/Firestone for the second time this season, drove to
a 14th place finish tonight in the rain-shortened SunTrust Indy Challenge at Richmond
International Raceway.
Herta ran in the top-ten most of the night until an aggressive gamble on the final
restart cost him four positions.
On lap 159, Herta made a move to the outside on the final restart of the race,
enabling him to get by Kenny Brack and Buddy Rice. Unfortunately, he was unable to
get the car back down into the racing line and brushed the wall coming out of the fourth
turn. Herta was working his way back to challenge for position when a rain shower
came and ended the race after 206 of the scheduled 250 were completed.
Scott Dixon won his second consecutive Indy Racing League (IRL) IndyCar™
Series race, leading every lap of the event. Team Penske teammates Helio
Castroneves and Gil de Ferran finished second and third, respectively. Herta’s
teammate and IndyCar Series points leader Tony Kanaan came home in fifth preserving
his points lead for another week. Rookie Dan Wheldon finished eighth.
The IRL IndyCar Series moves to Kansas Speedway next Sunday July 6, for
Round 8 of the 2003 championship.
Bryan Herta, #27 Archipelago/Motorola:
"It seemed like once everything settled down after a restart, we didn't have a car
to make many passes -- it didn't look like many guys did. I knew I had to try and make
something happen on the last restart to move the Archipelago/Motorola car to the front.
I got around (Kenny) Brack on the outside of Turn 1 and Turn 2 and I wasn't planning on
it, but the track opened up in front of me so I went three-wide going into turn three and I
just couldn't get the car down. I ended up getting into the gray and I hit the wall. I lost a
lot of time there."

Kyle Moyer, Team Manager, Archipelago/Motorola
“Once the race started we knew our car wasn’t the best, so we were riding around
waiting for an opportunity. Bryan tried to make something happen and went on the
outside and unfortunately he brushed the wall. We need to just work a little harder.”
