BARBER SWEEPS POLES AT MID-OHIO

LEXINGTON, OHIO (June 28, 2003) –Westley Barber, of Saffron, England,
captured the pole for Rounds Five and Six of the 2003 Formula Ford 2000
Zetec Championship at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. Completing the
top-three for Round Five is Tonis Kasemets, of Mundelein, Ill. and Jonathan
Bomarito, of Monterey, Calif. Completing the top-three for Round Six is
Charlie Kimball, of Camarillo, Calif. and Kasemets. The top ACC qualifier
for both rounds is Chris Dona, of Sandown, N.H.
In ideal sunny conditions, qualifying for race one of the Mid-Ohio Road
Racing Classic got underway-early Saturday morning. With the drivers having
had three test sessions and two practices prior to qualifying, the cars got
up to speed very quickly. Early in the 25-minute session Andy Brumbaugh was
quickest, with several drivers posting very similar times. Driving the No.
32 Cape Motorsports Van Diemen Ford, Barber lead the field at the midway
point, with Bomarito a mere tenth of a second slower. As the session
progressed, several cars pitted to make minor setup changes, however
Bomarito stayed on track. At the 20-minute mark the strategy looked to have
paid off, with Bomarito posting the fastest time, in his No. 23 Valley
Financial PR1 Motorsports Van Diemen Ford. Benefiting from the changes made
to his car, Barber began to challenge Bomarito’s time late in the session.
In the closing minutes, Barber retook the pole position with a lap of
1:23.043 (97.886 MPH), while Kasemets, driving the No. 9
FlexOvit/MKIndustries/TMI Pabst Racing Services Van Diemen Ford, posted his
fastest lap, capturing a front-row.
Following a brief break, qualifying for race two began just prior to the
lunch break. As in the first qualifying session, the drivers used the
opening laps to scrub in their sticker tires. Resuming where he left off,
Barber jumped to the top of the charts early in the session. After
challenging Barber early on, Kasemets took over the top spot at the halfway
point of the 20-minute session. With the drivers able to find gaps in
traffic, the times steadily fell as the session progressed. In the closing
minutes of qualifying, Kimball posted a fast lap, to move his No. 91
Rentvillas.com PR1 Motorsports Van Diemen Ford to the provisional pole. On
the final lap of qualifying, Barber posted a lap of 1:23.078 (97.845 MPH) to
retake the pole position. In sweeping both pole positions, Barber now has
four poles in six races.
“I’m very pleased about capturing both poles,” said Barber, who currently
leads the Championship. “In the first session the car was a little difficult
to drive, but I came in and made a change, which really worked. In the
second qualifying everyone got quicker, but I was able to post a good lap at
the end. It’s good to get back on track and hopefully things will continue
in the races tomorrow.”
“The car feels really good,” said Kasemets, who has won twice previously at
Mid-Ohio. “In the first qualifying I was not really on top of my game and
made a few mistakes in traffic. In the second session I should have come in
and cooled the tires. With it being so hard to pass here, I’ll be looking to
capitalize on any opportunities that come up.”
“I was able to work traffic really well,” said Kimball, who won both rounds
of the West Coast Zetec Championship. “I’ve got a good car to race with and
I’m always learning out there.”
“The car came in a little early,” said Bomarito, who is second in the
championship. “I though I had more in the car, so I stayed out, which didn’t
work. We’ll keep working towards a better car for the race.”
“It’s great to take both poles in the ACC,” said Dona, who leads the
American Continental Class championship. “I’m expecting a very exciting
race.”
Completing the top-five in qualifying for race one is Brumbaugh, of
Blythewood, S.C., in the No. 86 Andy LLC/Corby Concepts Cape Motorsports
Ford. In qualifying for race two, Craig Baltzer, of Bettendorf, Iowa,
completes the top-five, driving the No. 8 Sparco/Lakefront
Technologies/Decal Works JDC Motorsports Van Diemen Ford.
