SHANE LEWIS TO RACE AT ROAD ATLANTA FRESH FROM LEADING LE MANS
BRASELTON, Ga., June 27, 2003 - Twelve days ago Shane Lewis was leading
at the midpoint of the 24 Heures Du Mans in the ACEMCO Automotive
Ferrari 360 GT Modena. This weekend the Jupiter, Fla. resident returns
to the United States to continue his assault on the GT class
championship in the American Le Mans Series (ALMS). Lewis will pilot a
Ferrari 360 GT Modena prepared by ACEMCO Motorsports of Spring Lake,
Mich. in Sunday's Chevy Grand Prix of Atlanta. The CBS Sports televised
event will be Lewis' first time back in the ACEMCO Ferrari since
charging the car from seventh to the lead in the world's most famous
sports car race. Despite battling a contingent of Porsches, the ACEMCO
entry was able to make steady progress through the field and into the
lead until an engine failure ended its day just past the midpoint of the
race. This weekend also marks the debut of a new 360 GT Modena for the
team. The familiar silver and red ACEMCO Automotive entry that competed
at both Sebring and Le Mans will be replaced with a slightly different
version painted silver and yellow. Lewis joins Lilburn, Georgia's Andrew
Davis at Road Atlanta in Sunday's two hour and 45-minute race.
"It was a thrill to lead Le Mans," reflected Lewis after arriving in
Atlanta. "We kept moving up through the field over the first few hours.
We made the jump up to fifth pretty quickly and sat there for awhile
then up to fourth. Third to first happened really quickly and then,
unfortunately, first to out happened really quickly too. But, I think we
showed a lot of what this program is capable of. I'm really looking
forward to getting the ACEMCO Ferrari back to the front. We still have
our work cut out for us because we are bringing a new car here this
weekend. Road Atlanta is a tough place but we learned a few things at Le
Mans we hope to be able to apply here. The ACEMCO Motorsports guys have
been working night and day since they got back from France to have this
car ready. Yokohama has been working to give us the best tire for the
car and Andrew and I are going to give it everything we can. We picked
up some good momentum at Le Mans and we are trying to bring back as much
of that as we can. Unfortunately, momentum is a pretty tough thing to
pack into your luggage so we'll have to wait 'til Sunday to see what got
through Customs."
Shane Lewis is the 1998 Professional Sports Car Racing Rising Star award
winner and is a multiple race winner in IMSA, SCCA Pro and Grand-Am
sanctioned events. He has raced in three 24 Hours of Le Mans, six 24
Hours of Daytona, six 12 Hours of Sebring and four Petit Le Mans. Lewis,
a regular top-five finisher in ALMS competition, has earned ALMS podium
finishes at Silverstone, the Nurburgring and Portland and is one of the
few drivers with experience in the four major classes of international
sports car racing (LMP 900, LMP 675, GTS and GT). In 2003, Lewis is a
fulltime driver for ACEMCO Motorsports in the ALMS and lead driver for
the Nuzzo Motorsports Mini Cooper S in Grand-Am Cup.
