DAYTONA PROTOTYPES LEAD CHARGE OF MEMORIES, SPEED AT MID-OHIO
ROA D RACING CLASSIC
DUBLIN, Ohio (June 23, 2003) -- Sports car racing fans in the 1980's and
early 1990's used to crowd the fences at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in
Lexington, Ohio to watch full-bodied GTP coupes fight tooth and nail. Now
those fans can witness the same exciting competition as the new Daytona
Prototypes of the Rolex Sports Car Series take to the track during the
Mid-Ohio Road Racing Classic, June 27-29.
Those same fans will remember Mid-Ohio's history of endurance racing,
including running through the night during 24-hour races in the mid-1980's.
During the Mid-Ohio Road Racing Classic, a taste of that experience will be
renewed during round 7 of the Rolex Series' 12-race season, when the green
flag waves at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 28th for the 2-hour, 45-minute
race extending into the early evening hours.
The new Daytona Prototypes are hand-built race machines with powerful
engines from Porsche, Chevrolet, Toyota and BMW. Built to specifications
developed to meet the demands of American racetracks, these sleek new cars
are piloted by some of the best racecar drivers in North America.
These mid-engine rockets were designed with American race fans and teams in
mind. With a goal of tight, competitive racing, the Daytona Prototypes have
hit the mark and have already got the racing world buzzing with the
door-banging, wheel-to-wheel racing already seen at earlier races this
season.
Among the teams and drivers are legends in the sport of American road
racing. Brumos Racing, which has entered two Daytona Prototypes in the
Mid-Ohio Road Racing Classic, has a mantle full of championship and major
event trophies. The team's #59 Porsche-powered FABCAR Daytona Prototype is
piloted by five-time Rolex 24 winner Hurley Haywood, Teamed with rookie J.C.
France, grandson to NASCAR founder William H.G. France, the pair set the
standard early in the year with a pair of wins and have the rest of the
field scrambling to keep them in their sights.
First among the challengers is the other Brumos car, the #58 Red Bull
Porsche Daytona Prototype driven by David Donohue, son of the legendary Mark
Donohue, and former Formula 2000 and Sports 2000 champion Mike Borkowski.
Borkowski knows the Mid-Ohio circuit as well as anyone, working as an
instructor at The Mid-Ohio School, the official driving school of Mid-Ohio
Sports Car Course. Combined with a win in the Rolex Series' past two events,
the #59 Brumos Porsche has to be among the favorites at the Mid-Ohio Road
Racing Classic.
Another leading contender in the class is the #54 Chevy-powered Doran JE4
Daytona Prototype of Bell Motorsports. This all-American powerhouse is
driven by two drivers who know quite a bit about speed. Terry Borcheller is
a two-time driver champion in the Rolex Series, while his co-driver and car
owner Forest Barber is a former world champion and world record holder in
offshore powerboat racing.
Other teams in the Daytona Prototype ranks are racing cars from FABCAR,
Multimatic and Picchio with Toyota, Ford and BMW powerplants. With new teams
being formed and other cars nearing completion, the early winners have no
chance to rest on their laurels as the competition gets more and more fierce
with every race.
The Daytona Prototypes are not the only cars competing in the Rolex Sports
Car Race, however. Sports cars resembling their road-going cousins will
compete in both the Grand Touring and Grand Touring Sport classes during the
same event, competing for position in both the overall standing and their
respective classes.
Also competing during the Mid-Ohio Road Racing Classic are a number of
support series eager to add to the show. The Grand-Am Cup, the Rolex Sports
Car Series' street stock cousins, will battle for stock supremacy during the
weekend. The Formula Ford 2000 Zetec Championship doubleheader and the
Fran-Am Sport 2000 double-header will give the weekend an open-wheel flavor.
And making its debut at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course is the Stock Car
Championship Series, a purpose-built "stock car" series that competes solely
on road courses.
Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course is located approximately halfway between Columbus
and Cleveland, off Interstate 71. Commonly referred to as the "Most
Competitive in the U.S.," Mid-Ohio hosts six motorsports events throughout
the summer, which began with the Sprint Vintage Grand Prix and includes the
Honda Super Cycle Weekend presented by Dunlop Tire, July 25-27, and the
Valvoline Runoffs®, September 15-21. For event information and tickets, call
