NOTES OF INTEREST: This year's Big Daddy's Liberty 200 at South Boston Speedway will be the second appearance of the ARCA RE/MAX Series at the renowned southern Virginia short-track. Defending race winner/polesitter Ken Schrader has again entered for this year's classic in his own Federated Auto Parts-sponsored Pontiac. Schrader has 9 career RE/MAX Series wins in a variety of tracks including short-tracks, superspeedways, dirt-tracks and road courses. Native Virginian and NASCAR veteran Hermie Sadler has also entered. Sadler, who finished 2nd at MIS in his ARCA RE/MAX debut in June, cut his teeth at South Boston in the late model stock divisions. Also entered is Matthew Carter, son of Winston Cup car owner Travis Carter; and Paul Menard, son of renowned Indy car owner John Menard. With 10 races in the books, there have been 6 different winners. Defending champion and current point leader Frank Kimmel leads the way with 3 wins (Toledo, Lowe's & Berlin) with Kyle Busch (Nashville & Kentucky) and Shelby Howard (Salem & Kansas) tied with 2 wins each. Other winners in 2003 include Chase Montgomery at Daytona, Mark Gibson at Atlanta and most recently Casey Mears at MIS. Kimmel, well on his way to his 5th series title, has not yet finished out of the top-5 in 2003. In addition, Kimmel has led 613 laps in 9 events already this year. Howard, 17, became the youngest winner in series history with his victory at Salem in April. Howard also notched his name in the record books as ARCA's youngest superspeedway winner in history with his win at Kansas in June. Christi Passmore and Bill Eversole, 9th and 10th in points respectively, are locked in a serious battle for Rookie of the Year honors with Passmore leading Eversole by just 2 points headed to South Boston. Third-generation driver Jason Jarrett is currently 2nd in points. The son of '99 Winston Cup champ Dale Jarrett finished 6th at South Boston last year. Sons of former ARCA RE/MAX Series champions entered include Billy Venturini and Todd Bowsher. Billy's father Bill Venturini racked up ARCA titles in '87 & '91 while Todd's father and current car owner Jack Bowsher won 3 consecutive crowns in '63, '64 & '65. Billy Venturini, a 3rd-generation driver, tied his career-best ARCA finish of 3rd last year at South Boston. Newcomer Brent Sherman continued in his steady climb to the top of the points battle with a solid 6th place finish recently at MIS. Sherman, just prior to that, finished 2nd at Berlin and Kansas.
