St. Amant Will Miss IRP While Recovering From Injury

Pendleton, Ind. (June 24, 2003) – Two-time ASA Racing Series National Champion Gary
St. Amant will miss the ASA Racing 200 presented by BFGoodrich Tires on Saturday, June
28  at  Indianapolis  Raceway  Park  while  recovering  from  injuries  suffered  in  the  previous
event.

Appalachian  Motorsports  decided  early  Tuesday  to  withdraw  $50,00  Rookie  Candidate
Stephen Leicht from the 2003 program. Plans call for Leicht to make two additional starts
this season, possibly Illiana Motor Speedway and Fairgrounds Speedway at Nashville. The
Asheville, N.C., native is expected to compete full-time for rookie honors in 2004.

Scott  Hansen,  a  26-time  ASA  race  winner,  will  pilot  the  No.  23  The  Medicine  Shoppe
Chevrolet  in  the  upcoming  ASA  Racing  200  Presented  by  BFGoodrich  Tires  200  at
Indianapolis Raceway Park on Saturday, June 28. Hansen continues to fill the roll as team
manager for Appalachian Motorsports.

In  the  late  stages  of  the  ASA  Racing  Ohio  250  at  Mansfield  Motorsports  Speedway  on
Saturday,  June  21,  St. Amant  spun  down  the  fronstretch  and  was  involved  in  a  multi-car
incident, including heavy impact to the left rear of his The Medicine Shoppe Chevrolet. After
an overnight stay in a local hospital, St. Amant was released and is recovering from home.

“It was very reminiscent of my crash at Heartland Park Topeka a few years ago, but in that
one, it mostly affected my head,” St. Amant said. “I’m pretty bruised up, but I’ll be back at
Madison.”

St. Amant suffered several injuries, including four broken bones in the lumbar region of his
back (lower back), bruised kidneys and bruises throughout his arms and shoulders. While
he won’t be driving at Indianapolis Raceway Park, St. Amant said he plans to attend the race
to keep an eye on his fellow competitors.

“The  doctor  told  me  to  take  it  easy  for  a  couple  of  weeks  and  recover,  but  it  looks  like
everything is going to be fine,” St. Amant said.

By  missing  the ASA  race  at  Indianapolis  Raceway  Park,  St. Amant  will  end  his  string  of
consecutive starts at 297. He has 315 career starts and last missed an event in May of 1987.

Regarding the incident, St. Amant said he was grateful the impact to his car came where it
did.

“Had I been hit two or three feet further to the left or to the right, it really could have been
bad,” St. Amant said.

ASA next races on Saturday, June 28 at Indianapolis Raceway Park. The following event,
which St. Amant intends to return for, will be held Friday, July 18 at Madison International
Speedway in Oregon, Wis.
