Bad Luck Spoils The Day For Revolution Motorsports
Hayner to start 7th while Sak starts 11th
Sonoma, Calif. – June 22, 2003 – Points championship opportunities
escaped both Revolution Motorsports drivers today as they competed in
the fifth round of the Trans-Am Series for the BFGoodrich Tires Cup,
here at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, California. Stu Hayner [#2 Trenton
Forging / GMAC Commercial Finance Corvette] was struck by misfortune in
the early laps as he suffered a tire failure and lost precious time in
the pits. Several laps later Bobby Sak [#10 Revolution Motorsports
Corvette] had his day shortened with a bad gearbox.
“We’re not sure what happened with the tire yet,” explained Hayner.
“The crew has yet to find a leak…. And the tire still has eight pounds
of air in it. We had made a lot of improvement throughout the weekend.
I definitely had a top five car today.”
“This track is tough enough on four tires…let alone three,” Hayner
continued. “I was just getting settled in when I started to feel
something odd in the right rear. I actually tried to go a few laps
because the initial feeling wasn’t a typical tire failure. But, with no
straightaway, the constant left/right stress and unresponsiveness
quickly became a handful. We got back to the pits but had to go a lap
down. That was pretty much our day right there.”
Hayner finished 11th on the day and retains 5th place in the
Championship Points.
Sak’s fate was sealed seven laps into the race.
“My car was really starting to come in and I was settling into a good
pace,” Bobby remarked. “When I caught Stu, I figured, cool…. here we
go. We’re going to hook up and make a run. Then, I realized Stu was
having a problem so I went by and started keeping a good pace with the
second group back from the leaders. All of sudden a few laps later, I
came out of turn 10 [after the pit entrance] and BANG… the gearbox let
go. I was able to coast down the long stretch in front of pit lane and
pulled it off at the pit exit.”
Not only was Sak’s day shortened, the misfortune has put the Rookie
Championship chase in serious jeopardy. Sak’s last place finish places
him 7th overall in the points standings and 23 points behind his Rookie
title nemesis, Jorge Diaz.
Appearing on the NASCAR schedule this weekend, the Trans-Am 100 will
air on SPEED Channel Friday, June 27. The Series now moves to
Cleveland’s Burke Lakefront Airport with the CHAMP cars for the
Cleveland Grand Prix, July 4th weekend.
Revolution Motorsports in association with Trenton Forging competes as
part of the Trans-Am Series for the BF Goodrich Tires Cup. All events
are nationally televised on SPEED. The Trans-Am Series is the oldest
