Terry Borcheller - Watkins Glen race
so close ...
The checkered flag was two laps too late for Terry Borcheller, who led most
of the Six Hours at The Glen Rolex Sports Car Series race on June 22. The
Phoenix driver started the No. 54 Bell Motorsports Doran JE4 third on the grid,
with positions set by series owner points after the qualifying session was
rained-out. The race was held on the long 3.4-mile Watkins Glen International
road course in Watkins Glen, N.Y.
Borcheller took the lead on the first lap and opened up a 40-second margin in
the first 20 minutes of the six-hour race. He and co-driver Didier Theys of
Belgium held the lead for most of the race, relinquishing it only during
pitstops. Theys was leading when he had contact with another prototype car on the
second-last lap, forcing him back to second place.
Forest Barber, who usually drives with Borcheller, returned to his home in
Fort Worth, Tex., for a family emergency. He will be back in the race car next
week.
"The team did a phenomenal job setting up the car and the pit stops were
fantastic," Borcheller said. "Didier did a great job, but he was held up by a
backmarker on the second-last lap and that stopped his momentum. It's a shame
because we led almost the whole race."
Cup race
Borcheller and Barber started the weekend with a Grand-Am Cup GS race at
Watkins Glen. Barber qualified the No. 54 Bell Motorsports BMW M3 11th in the
GSII class. He and Borcheller then moved up through the rain-soaked field to
finish fifth in class.
"We just didn't get to race. The officials kept saying conditions were too
dangerous," Borcheller said. "We lost a lap and never had an opportunity to
get it back. I was running 15 to 30 seconds faster than the cars ahead of us,
but every time I stretched it out, we'd get a yellow [caution flag]."
next
Borcheller and Barber will compete in two races at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course
- a Rolex Sports Car Series race on June 28 and a Grand-Am Cup GS race on
June 29.
