SHANE LEWIS DOUBLES AT THE GLEN
SHANE LEWIS DOUBLES AT THE GLEN
WATKINS GLEN, N.Y., June 20, 2003 - In true racer fashion, Shane Lewis
has added another event to his already busy race schedule. He has agreed
to drive the No. 66 Mears Motor Coach/ SpeedSource/ Champion Porsche/
Fikse Wheels Porsche 911 GT3 Cup entry in the Grand-Am Cup's Grand Sport
One (GS I) class. The SpeedSource Porsche complements Lewis's position
as lead driver in the popular #20 Lava Records/ Nuzzo Motorsports Mini
Cooper S in Grand-Am Sport Touring One (ST I). Lewis will co-drive with
Paul Mears, the 66 car's regular driver, in the Porsche and with Mike
Bavaro in the Mini Cooper S. The divisions, often paired in the same
race, have a split schedule this weekend here at Watkins Glen (NY)
International. The Glen Sport Touring 250 competes at 4 pm (EDT) Friday
afternoon and The Glen Grand Sport 250 races on Saturday at 4 pm. Lewis,
who is a multi-time Grand-Am Cup race winner has extensive experience in
Porsche 911s and drove the #65 SpeedSource 911 to victory in the
Grand-Am Cup season finale at Daytona International Raceway in 2002.
"I have known Sylvain (Tremblay, SpeedSource team owner) and Paul for a
long time and it is always a pleasure to drive for such a competitive
team," commented Lewis shortly after being approached by Tremblay to
race the Porsche. "With the two divisions being broken-up into two races
on two different days this gives me the perfect opportunity to go out
and race on Saturday as well as Friday. We won Daytona last year with
the SpeedSource Porsche so I am really looking forward to racing the 911
GT3 Cup car here at The Glen. It is a neat comparison between the Nuzzo
Motorsports Mini Cooper S and the SpeedSource Porsche 911. The two cars
really want to do two entirely different things out on track but that is
fun for me. The challenge is a big part of why I race and why I love to
race. Racing a Ferrari at Le Mans, a Mini Cooper S and a Porsche 911
here at 'The Glen' all in less than seven days is pretty diverse. I
wonder if someone has a Top Fuel dragster around here that I can play
with?"
Shane Lewis is the 1998 Professional Sports Car Racing Rising Star award
winner and is a multiple race winner in IMSA, SCCA Pro and Grand-Am
sanctioned events. He has raced in six 24 Hours of Daytona, six 12 Hours
of Sebring, three 24 Hours of Le Mans and four Petit Le Mans. Lewis, a
regular top-five finisher in ALMS competition, has earned ALMS podium
finishes at Silverstone, the Nurburgring and Portland and is one of the
few drivers with experience in the four major classes of international
sports car racing (LM P 900, LM P 675, LM GTS and LM GT). In 2003, Lewis
is a fulltime driver for ACEMCO Motorsports in the ALMS and lead driver
for the Nuzzo Motorsports Mini Cooper S in Grand-Am Cup.
