BPO Solutions announces first proprietary roaming mesh technology for automotive manufacturers and mobile devices.

New York, June 18 -- - BPO Solutions Ltd. has announced what it believes is a British first - its Meshhopper(tm) technology capable of the connectivity needed for wide ranging mobile wi-fi networks.

Andy Coney, Chief Executive Officer of BPO, says Meshhopper(tm) provides the step change that wi-fi itself, as well as the wireless networking industry and observers have all been looking for and waiting for. "Beyond hot spots, beyond micro-sites, Meshhopper(tm) provides the signal hopping platform to create networks that expand virally, parasitically or symbiotically - call it what you will."

Meshhopper(tm) works by being embedded in a static or roaming 'host', which can be anything from a laptop to a PDA, or a cell phone to a vehicle. The wi-fi network simply requires that each host be both transmitter and receiver. Wi-fi signals hop from host to host, creating a broadband mesh, without having to travel via a fixed transmission mast.

"Until now, broadband connectivity to and from moving vehicles has in the main been achieved using GPRS. But it's expensive, partly because it uses satellite technology, and so it's been limited to niche markets like the emergency services. Because Meshhopper(tm) transmits and receives using readily available mass-market hosts, it is much cheaper to make and deploy".

In both the way it works and its cost implications, Meshhopper(tm) represents a significant move forward in the practical possibilities for wi-fi networks. While, for example, a major European motor manufacturer recently announced a tie up with a tier one networks solutions business to provide wi-fi connections at service stations, that is still only a fixed WLAN offering. Furthermore, the offer is limited to the owners or drivers of that manufacturer's vehicles.

"Our offer is the equivalent of a common industry standard whereby each OEM can conform Meshhopper(tm) using their own specifications", explains Andrew Ramshaw, Chief Operating Officer of BPO.

Meanwhile, the business and leisure possibilities of in-car broadband connections are mouth watering - from video-conferencing to movies on-demand.

Following BPO's announcement, Ramshaw and Coney are inviting automotive manufacturers and the mobile devices industry to take mesh technology forward and capitalise on its mass market potential. "We also envisage as much interest and potential for and from chip makers and integrators," adds Coney.

BPO will be attending Ce-BIT America in New York between 18th and 20 June.
