CANTON, Ohio, June 18 -- Capitalizing on synergies from its recent acquisition of The Torrington Company, The Timken Company recently obtained two significant bearing orders from VAI Industries UK, Ltd., a designer and builder of manufacturing plants for the metals industries. The order, which exceeds $2.5 million (USD), includes tapered, cylindrical and ball bearings.

The larger of the two orders includes bearings for a hot rolling mill at Southwest Aluminum in Chongqing Province, China. The mill is comprised of a vertical edger, a roughing stand and four finishing stands. The second order consists of tapered, ball and cylindrical bearings for a cold-roll anneal and pickle line for Public Zone Company, Ltd. in Guangdong Province, China. The total package includes a wide range of bearings up to 900 mm inside diameter, weighing more than three tons.

"VAI's preference was to deal with one company on these projects," says Andrew MacDonald, general manager - procurement for VAI. "The Torrington acquisition enabled Timken to competitively offer VAI the entire package. The combined capability of the new organization influenced VAI's decision in awarding Timken this business."

"This truly was an integrated team effort in securing the new business," said Christopher A. Coughlin, The Timken Company's vice president - industrial equipment. "Our associates' knowledge and experience - combined with our broader line of products and services - was a major factor in delivering VAI with the right solution for its upcoming projects."

Sales and application teams from England, France, Romania and the United States provided application and design assistance in landing the order. The bearings will be produced in five plants located in four countries.

VAI Industries, UK is the United Kingdom-based subsidiary of Voest-Alpine Industrieanlagenbau (VAI), a leading engineering and plant-building company for the iron, steel and aluminum industries. Headquartered in Linz, Austria, VAI has global operations and employs approximately 3,400 people worldwide.

The Timken Company ( www.timken.com ) is a leading international manufacturer of highly engineered bearings, alloy and specialty steels and components, and a provider of related products and services. Following its February 2003 acquisition of The Torrington Company, Timken employs 28,000 people worldwide in operations in 29 countries.
