Lord Corporation Takes Rheonetic(TM) MR Technology Workshop to Europe As Engineers Broaden Exploration of Commercial Applications

2nd International Workshop June 24-26 in Strasbourg, France

CARY, N.C., June 10 -- While design engineers and scientists from a wide range of industries continue to develop new and unique uses for Rheonetic(TM) magnetorheological (MR) fluid, Lord Corporation, the world leader and sole commercial supplier of MR fluids, systems and devices, is hosting for the second year an international technology workshop, this year in Strasbourg, France.

Last year, Lord hosted its first MR Workshop at the company's global headquarters in Cary, NC. As they did last year, this year's workshop participants will jumpstart their design and use of this unique controllable fluid technology by learning from the experience of the experts in the field at Lord Corporation. Workshop attendees will explore the basic physics, chemistry and rheology of MR fluids as well as the advantages, limitations and concerns regarding their use. The workshop also will explore various design tools, MR devices and designs and electronic control systems.

Dr. J. David Carlson, an engineering fellow with Lord Corporation, has spent nearly two decades researching and developing controllable fluid technology. Dr. Carlson is the author of more than 25 technical papers and holds more than 50 U.S. patents relating to controllable fluids and devices. Dr. Carlson is one of the founders of the International ER and MR Fluid Conference Series that has been held every two years since 1987.

The "sMaRt(TM) Technology for Smart Engineers" workshop will be held June 24-26 at Lord Corporation's European Technology Center in Strasbourg, France. The Center is located on the outskirts of Strasbourg at 1, Rue Thomas Edison in the Zone d'Activites Est de Mundolsheim, 67450 Mundolsheim. Lord Corporation plans to host a second international workshop later this year in Detroit.

Rheonetic MR technology is based on proprietary and patented formulations, damper, mount, brake and clutch designs and sophisticated computer control algorithms. When exposed to a magnetic field, MR materials change consistency from a fluid state to a near-solid state. The MR fluids respond to a magnetic field within milliseconds.

Lord Corporation is the world's largest supplier and commercial development leader in MR fluids, devices and systems. The Materials Division of Lord Corporation has worked with its partners to develop commercially successful solutions in such diverse applications as automotive primary suspension, vehicular steer-by-wire, pneumatic actuation and motion control, medical prosthetic devices and civil structural control for seismic and wind.
