Kimberly-Clark: Car Covers Part of 'Layered Approach' To Deterring Auto Theft in High-Crime Areas

ROSWELL, Ga., June 10 -- The National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) today announced the Top 10 Auto Theft Areas in the United States. The Top 10 Auto Theft Areas include Phoenix; Miami; Fresno, Calif.; Sacramento, Calif.; Modesto, Calif.; Oakland, Calif.; Stockton-Lodi, Calif.; Seattle; Las Vegas; and, Tacoma, Wash. Cars in or near ports and Canadian and Mexican borders are among those most likely to be stolen. Although that news may sound grim, fortunately, car owners can use a simple tool to ward off would-be thieves and vandals: a car cover.

"Car covers are one of the first and most obvious deterrents thieves notice," says Bruce Williamson, Director of Sales and Marketing, Kimberly-Clark Nonwoven Fabrics. "Car covers help keep a vehicle and its interior out of sight. The average thief probably wouldn't risk the extra time it takes to remove a car cover, and would move on to an unprotected car."

Consumers can use car covers as part of a "layered approach" to combating theft, as recommended by the NICB. The basic rule-of-thumb is that the more layers you use to protect your vehicle, the tougher it is to steal. Other layers include warning systems, immobilizing devices, tracking mechanisms, and, of course, common sense.
